Hi, I have a temporary setup (long story, in a thread elsewhere) outputting optical audio from sky decoder to a soundbar. The decoder is connected to the TV with HDMI.

On channels 1-4 it doesn't work and the sound comes from the extremely tinny TV speakers. On changing to any other channel the sound comes from the sound bar. How come?

I think it would be much better (and would it fix this issue) if I took an audio-out from the TV to the soundbar, but the TV has no optical audio-out. It does have coax digital audio out, as does the soundbar, I just don't have a suitable cable at hand.

The new TV I am waiting on has HDMI ARC as does the soundbar, so I am hoping when that is done I will have decoder HDMI to the TV, TV HDMI ARC to the soundbar HDMI ARC and it will all work seamlessly without having to use anything other than the Sky remote to control volume?

Cheers

John

HD channels have a Dolby AC3 carrier, box will be outputting this carrier by default and sound bar can't decode. Change output to PCM.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Also, be careful with your proposed new TV set-up. Not all TV's will send the audio from one HDMI input back down the ARC HDMI channel.

Hi, I poked around and found 'raw' as a digital audio output, is that the same as PCM?

Nope, it should be PCM/MPEG.

What are you poking around in?

Settings for sound on Sky decoder will be pcm/MPEG.

Unless the latest ones are different I don't recall seeing a raw setting.

This was in the MySky decoder setup/audio menu... Will have another look this evening and maybe grab a screen shot.

I do have a PDF copy of the manual in front of me and it does have pcm as an option. Hope it didn't disappear in the last software update!

Dunno what I was looking at before, must have been my beer goggles. There's a PCM/MPEG option there and selecting that means it's all good regardless of channel.

The Sky remote is not changing the soundbar volume though - should resolve itself when it is connected together with HDMI ARC.

Thanks for the assist!
