Thanks for @GeorgefromLightbox I've sideloaded the APK onto my Amazon Fire Stick. For some additional background see this thread.

Here's some feedback

Good

  • Overall look/feel of app
  • Performance
  • Lack of skipping/pausing due to buffering.

Average

  • Video Quality

    • Even in HQ mode it isn't as good as viewing via Google Chrome full screen on same display.
    • Showed up with the dark scenes in episode 9 of The Handmaids Tale.
  • Layout once a show is selected makes it hard to see the individual episodes.

Poor

  • Accessibility with Remote

    • Needed to use keyboard and/or mouse to navigate
    • Currently not possible to use the following without a mouse

      • Enter settings
      • Select a show
      • Start a show
      • FFWD/RWND/Pause
  • Video streams appear to be in 60p.

    • Had really bad motion blur with device set to 50Hz refresh compared with 60.

Bad

  • Once I'm playing a video I can't bring up the overlay for pause / forward / rewind via mouse/keyboard or remote.
  • Only way to pause video is back/exit and then restart the video stream.

Recommendations

  • Update API / SDK to support remote control based access.
  • Adjust display for better layout on 720 and 1080 displays.

    • Would allow for better browsing of shows and episodes.

I'd be more than happy to try out alternative builds. This really is the show stopper for wider use of Lightbox by the family as we'd rather not use a browser to access it on our primary TV.

I agree with everything posted above, especially the last bit. I have free access to lightbox but don't use it, rather Netflix or other means as they work seamlessly on my aftv.

(I acknowledge and appreciate that George has helped us out with access to the apk)

@openmedia

Any update on this? Is it usable on Fire TV now?

I installed the Android TV version yesterday. It installed fine and let me login but wouldn’t play anything. If anyone has ideas I’d appreciate the feedback.

It's on the Play store. I think I used apkpure to download it.

I'm super keen on this too, don't get Free-view reception anymore and am relying on a FTV v1 box.

I've been using it for months and it works well. I'm wondering if sign in might be the issue as I tried the vanilla Android TV APK first and then switched.

Overall video quality is excellent and other than a couple of UK issues it works well.

It's odd. I can sign in and browse fine but when I try and play something get "Failed to playback, please try again later"

Remove the APK and try the traditional Android version if you have a bluetooth mouse.

The try the Apple TV version

Also do you have a DNS Geo Bypass enabled?

OK so that was really easy - just downloaded the app onto my S7 from the Playstore- uploaded it to the fire TV with 'Apps2fire' , and then installed a mouse cursor app https://tinyurl.com/firetvmouse to be able to click the button so you can register the device, and browse the lightbox menu.

Didn't even have the quality on full as I'm on 4G wireless atm, and it looked fine to me!

@insane you want to then look at the AndroidTV version as it works without needing a mouse which is a lot more family friendly.

I can't get this to work. I installed the Android TV version and it appears to load fine, but when I try and play anything I get the "Failed to playback, please try again later" message that Handle9 was getting.

I uninstalled that version and tried to install the traditional version but got the message "Lightbox won't run without Google Play services, which are not supported by your device".

I don't have any geo blockers installed.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do?

Odd.

Try under the FireTV settings to clear the Cache and Data

You'll then need to re-login to the APK again and see what happens

Can you run an "adb logcat" command against your firetv?

The upgrade is working well for me on a Fire TV Gen 2 Stick and a Fire TV Gen3
