Does ANYONE believe anything written in the Herald these days? its a crappy tabloid filled with fake news and trivial gossip and crap they have pulled from reddit. Also they have been bashing Sky for months..

Something Sky doesn't understand  - if you want to get people to use yours ervice you need to make it as easy as possible and that is done by making it instant; signing up should give you access instantly - no installation waiting, no extra hardware - instant access on the day you want it.

Their scheduled pushing out of low quality streams of old content with breaks for ads all the time could be free, and I would not use it, like I dont use freeview because it doesnt have any appeal to me.

If they can get everything in HD minimum, preferably 4k, not munge the framerate and put it in a cheap app that I can watch when I want without any adverts ever, in an app on any device I own with no restriction on the number of devices, just a cap on simultaneous streams, have a wide variety of content and a good suggestion engine, then I might consider it. Hang on, I have just described netflix...

Upside to Sky is no dish cost, no installer cost. Downside is they may need to look at a CDN.

SkyGo has improved a lot in video quality. Relaibility also. It used to have seem sport plus 4 or 5 minor channels such as CNN. I think I counted 26 all up the other day. 

One huge problem is security. "Mate, can I borrow your Sky login for next week?" They need to have a way od ensuring you have access to everything, and any device, but only your devices, thats probably a bit hard  Netflix has the same issue but at $15 who cares, just buy it.

I thinks its real

1. The source gave enough specific detail to look genuine.

2. Sky needs to do something.

3. Sky clearly has visibility on how hugely popular the Sky Deal is ($50 for Basic, Sport, HD, MySky)

I like Basic. If I wasnt into sport and Basic was $25 I'd get it, just to have the docos and some other bits handy if wanted. 

If Basic did reduce by $25, that makes basic, Sport, HD, MySky $75. That is a great price. 

Sky make $12 per subscriber per month, so no wiggle room. If the above went from $100 to $75 for everyone, they will make a loss the same size as the current profit. But adding back a lot of new subscribers at $75 is what they need to at least make that back. If the numbers crunched well, and even if they were no better off, they would have a stable subscriber level. 

BUTTTTTTT. If they reduce the price of Basic, and reduce the content of Basic, where is the benefit? Its there if you ONLY want sport, but if you took away say 5 channels that I like, I wont take it, and I will save nothing. So, Sky would then only be catering for new subscribers and asking some existing to pay for it

The sport PPV is interesting. Fanpass was there to get back revenue from sport watchers who ditched Sky due to cost. Then they increased it as it probably encouraged churn. PPV rugby may just get some revenue back that they currently dont have.

It is almost nationwide especially in many urban areas so the big question is whether we'll see the government make bigger changes because there are still horror stories of installations being held back because of neighbours obstructing.

Sky would no longer have to maintain a fleet of SkyTV boxes, people going around installing set top boxes, maintenance would fall through the floor thus leaving maybe a small handful of users who are in the rural areas. Regarding a CDN - merge Lightbox and Neon into a joint venture so you end up having Sky Live and the newly merged Neon/Lightbox being jointly owned by Spark and Sky - Spark being the deliverer of content via its network of data centers located around New Zealand. Side note: Do TVNZ actually read the feedback for their applications on XBox and iOS? I sometimes wonder who actually writes these applications given how routinely they ignore feedback.

There are still lots of places that have slow (or non-existent) broadband. If it was 100% coverage then I'd say yes, great idea. But switching off the satellite service would leave a large number of people locked out entirely.

I don't think Lightbox and Neon would merge, although it's an interesting idea.

87% is pretty close to nationwide. For (nearly) everyone else, they'll have RBI2, which is specced to allow for streaming video during peak times.

There's some assumptions going on here. I'm assuming you're talking about History, NatGeo etc. You're assuming these channels will be available on a new basic package. You've stated above you give credence to the source, so it would pay to remember:

 The source said that the new basic package would offer a stripped back version of the channel portfolio currently offered under the basic tier.

I've no doubt Sky have viewing habit metrics fed back to them via their STB's so they know where the value lies. I would imagine a 'stripped back version' would contain a lot of the less popular channels. On the upside, the mass of adverts would still be there though :-)
