I see the Herald just reported that it looks like Spark will win the EPL rights, meaning it's unlikely to be available via Sky. beIN currently have the rights to the EPL, and transmit via Sky platform, as an $16 addon rather than part of the Sky Sports.

Sky has not had the rights for years, beIN has the rights and let sky broadcast it.

This is very bad reporting as when they contacted sky the following was told to them but they just put it right at the end of the write up.

*********

In response to a query from the Herald, Sky head of sport Richard Last said: "We have not had the EPL rights for five seasons now.

"The rights are currently held by beIN Sports, who deliver them on Sky's platform. We know beIN have the rights for next season. We are not the current rights holders, nor even the next most recent rights holders so really cannot comment any further."

**********

The reporter in this needs a kick in the bu** as they did not fact check a lot of stuff before hit the publish button.  But it's the Herald so don't expect much from them these days.

Also just want to point out that spark has had the rights to EPL before and could not do it right back then *cough cough Lightbox Sports* so it should be interesting

True - but it's easily accessible to Sky customers, as a $16 addon, in the same way they can add Soho for $10, or Rialto for $11. Not having EPL is just one less reason to choose Sky.

But you can get EPL via BeInConnect for $20/mth or $200/year.  Getting it direct means there has already been one less reason to choose Sky.  So nothing really is changing other than having to pay Spark to stream it instead of BeIN.   <yawn>

But if you add the word Sky, you get the bee's around a honeypot scenario!

Do you think Sky will repeat what it did last time when Coliseum (PLP) first got the rights - get MUTV, ChelseaTV, etc?  Foxtel replicated the strategy and obviously didnt care that Optus renewed.

Just like 7 weeks of the RWC, I don't think Sky really are losing much sleep over not having EPL rights. They are very expensive, and most games are played when most of us are fast asleep. Sure, they will loose some customers, but they are saving tens of millions in not going for the rights.

And with Al Jazeera (beIN) and Spark (Lightbox) already competing against each other, the future rights are not going to be cheap.

The ability to record then watch on SKY with the easy fast-forwarding is brilliant, i don't think BeIn apps have that. I rarely have time to watch a full 90min game these days and usually fast forward my way through in around 45-60mins...

That would be my only real gripe with a non-SKY product.

Sky for all their negatives is a very simple easy, generally user friendly product to use

Wow.  Apparently just 0.4% of Sky's audience watches the EPL.  If thats 800,000 households with 2.7 people per household thats less than 10,000 people that watch.

Even more marginal than I realised.....

I watch a lot of sport, but honestly couldn't care less about soccer, that 0.4% doesn't surprise me at all. It's so damn boring to watch! tongue-out

Is that how many watch live or does it include recorded? Not surprising viewing numbers may not be high at 3am.

the problem with the EPL is that most people follow one team , in my case Liverpool, and i will not watch any games unless they involve Liverpool, so that means i would only watch 1-2 games a week. Most fans i know are the same .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Same. I watch every one of my team's games, but just haven't got the spare time to watch other games.

I just got Fan Pass through Spark for a year. Does the offer of $16 a month for beIN extend to Fan Pass subbers or just Sky. Wondering how much EPL Fan Pass is likely to screen. Highlights would be enough for me. Cheers.
