Hi There

I have a new Samsung nu 7100 smart tv. Its connected to my modem via an ethernet cable. The quality is pretty average. All the other apps like netflix and

youtube 4k content look faultless but fanpass is average. It lags an and is not smooth. I have noticed the tennis looks good ( say 720p) but rugby tends to

have a poorer quality do to some sort of extra processing I guess. We have a vdsl connection I will do some research and play with the router settings to

prioritise the conex. Has anybody else had a simialr experience? Any suggestions would be great!

If Netflix and Youtube are fine then don't play with the router,

its the TV (or more specifically the Fanpass App, and there is probably nothing you can do to fix it...

I disagree. Netflix and Youtube have the advantage of not being broadcasted live. Many live services will have buffering issues because live streaming cannot keep up with the speed of the sports. Whereas services like Netflix/YouTube etc will all be fine.

Whats your latency like when running speedtests?

Try running Fanpass on a PC which is plugged into your TV? This will help identify if the problem is with the Samsung TV or not.

Try some other live streams from your PC. If they fine, then its most likely a problem with the Fanpass App, TV, or fanpass service.

I have not used fanpass in a while so not sure if they have any on demand stuff? If it does whats the quality like on that? Better or the same as the live streaming? My gut tells me it will be better quality.

The idea that a live stream is inherently lower quality than on demand is total non sense, playout of a stream be it from a fibre feed or straight off a server is in theory identical.. Sky wish that the FP live stream quality is substandard for obvious reasons. I don't think the service is fit for purpose and cancelled my sub after testing for just two days. Sky is all about the lowest common denominator when it comes to technical standards so that the share holder can be rewarded for least effort.

As for their SD mpeg2 streams, beyond words how they could still be transmitting such rubbish in 2018.

Agree. I found that on FP with F1 live. I assume there is still some buffering, as SkyGo is delayed. So, there should not be an issue, unless it is live from the game so its not buffered from say Europe to NZ, so we end up with that 100% live streaming and what goes with it?

The live streams are played out from a CDN in NZ, no buffering involved (and there wouldn't be buffering involved anyway. The OTA DVB-S2 transmission is the same stream except better quality, i.e., higher bitrate and resolution (for obvious reasons)). Sky deliberately down-sample the streams or pay lesser amounts for lower quality streams specifically to put on FP.

ESPN+ has the rugby live with what appears to my eye-chrometer to be in Full HD.

ESPN+ is streamed in 720p60.

For me it looks better than rugbypass streams, so I assumed it was 1080p.

From personal experience, I found originally that changing ISPs negatively affected Fanpass (going from Vodafone to Skinny, then BigPipe). It seems to have been better lately, although I've only signed up to watch the rugby and the league.

From the latest with Spark discounting Fanpass, I'm hoping that any issues transiting through ISPs has been resolved.

This I can believe. When I got gigabit fibre (ISP is Spark) in February 2017 I tested FP over a weekend. The image quality I would rate 4/10 (720p I suppose but certainly low bitrate) and consider it worth a non premium price, i.e., $20/month. Trouble is that at least every ten minutes on average the FP app, Samsung TV, would produce a server error. 0/10 and totally unfit for purpose. I couldn't even be bothered to trace the source of the stream. Worse than SkyGo IMHO - but haven't used it for years.

Note: House is data cabled with cat6. TV on own vlan, all other streaming services are perfect.

I’ve watched live broadcasts on YouTube.

The ones I watched no one would know it wasn’t direct TV.

I’d say it’s poor implementation by Sky.

Same with BeIN Connect, not possible to distinguish between live stream and live OTA Sky transmission. Nor should it be.

Hi there,

Thanks for the insight everybody. I should have added that I can watch fanpass on my 21.5 inch wirelessly connected imac and it looks great ?? smaller screen I guess.

.Much better than the television. I did a download speedtest independent from spark and the average was 15 Mbps . I have cat 6 cabling. I read on the fanpass website that to get 720p like quality on fanpass I need 5 Mbps.

If anyone has anything else to add it would be appreciated. I will contact fanpass and see if they can enlighten me or perhaps try to cancel my six month subscription.
