Didn’t expect this. Just got an email from Sky:

"From 18 September 2019, TVNZ DUKE will be available in HD to all Sky customers. As a result, on the 18 September 2019, any future bookings, including “Series Linked” programmes, on TVNZ DUKE will need to be deleted and rebooked. This applies to bookings on TVNZ DUKE only."

Cool, will finally be able to record it in HD, or not have to swap to Freeview signal for live.

Is that in preparation for Spark Sport RWC fail-over?

Any reason why Sky and Freeview can't split the cost and share HD versions of all the FTA channels?

Or is that just too sensible?

You mean Sky and TVNZ.  Freeview is just an umbrella marketing organisation really.  Each broadcaster is responsible for its own feed and how it configures it.

Small operators dont even buy capacity from Freeview - as Freeview doesnt have any access to satellites or towers, correct?

It's up to the individual broadcaster to make those decisions, Not Freeview.
Personally having HD on DVB-S FTA would be amazing! :-)

And there is the rub. If you do HD on an mpeg-2 DVB-S Freeview uplinked stream, which SD services do you kick off to make room? If you do it on a Sky stream, it's mpeg-4 DVB-S2 so what happens to the Freeview customers whose boxes wont do S2? As much as I'd like to see it there is likely no financial incentive to make it happen, just a lot of cost and work.
