"Sky TV says it has signed a new NRL deal covering games through to the end of 2027.

The deal covers NRL, State of Origin and all the NZRL-run matches involving the Kiwis and the Kiwi Ferns rugby league teams.

"We commit to making some important matches available free-to-access," Sky said in a statement. Which? "We're working through those details. The likes of the Anzac test sound just about right, chief executive Sophie Moloney told the Herald.

Terms were not disclosed, but the Herald understands Sky had to fend off an attempt at an NRL rights-grab by Spark Sport.

On June 17, Spark Sport said it had won what it called a "competitive tender" for rights to the 2021 Rugby League World Cup (and Moloney confirmed today that Sky did bid for the event) fuelling speculation it would target the NRL next.

After gaining the cricket rights, Spark Sport said it was seeking a major winter sport as an anchor for its platform. "We would very much like to carry a tier-one winter sport going forward," Spark Sport boss Jeff Latch told the Herald in April.

According to Nielsen, some 1.1 million New Zealanders have tuned in to at least one NRL game this year. League was the last of the Big Four sports up for grabs as Spark Sport tussled with Sky. Sky secured rugby and netball, and now league, while the pair have split cricket rights."

While we are on sports rights, I saw plenty of "Sky is the home of cricket" adverts last night during the WTC Final. Their upcoming cricket schedule this summer looks good!

"We also broadcast all Cricket Australia home internationals (Men's and Women's) including the Ashes Series from 8 December and the BLACKCAPS 3x ODI series and one-off T20 from 30 Jan 2022. On top of this we have men’s’ and women’s Big Bash Leagues, domestic matches in cricket-mad Pakistan, all international cricket played in India, South Africa and the West Indies and the action-packed Indian Premier League."

As well as the T20 world cup in India October 2021.

I pretty much only watch NRL, and a bit of cricket in the summer. I was hoping Spark would get NRL so I could just pay a single sub :)

NRL locked in for 6 years is a bit of a coup I would think.

After missing out on the cricket in NZ earlier this year we are enjoying the Black Caps from the other side of the world as delivered by Sky. Fantastic! Which prompts me to wonder aloud as to whether Spark Sport and Sky are having any discussions which would enable Sky carrying the next season domestic cricket. Would be happy with a special subscription channel, just can't afford the internet data to get it direct from Spark Sport.
