If a program is booked to record at a later time, Or the unit is currently recording can you put it into standby? or will this stop the recording

You can safely put the unit in standby.  The only thing that standby really does is stop the display of the 'live channel' to your TV.  The recordings will continue.  The hard drive keeps spinning even in standby.
