Like a lot of people, we've bought a SSN annual pass in the Black Friday special, the last two years.  Last year, Sky left it fairly late before announcing the deal ($365 for the year).  It sort of seemed maybe Sky wanted to wait as long as possible for people to renew at the non-Black Friday renewal rate, before announcing the special.  It also could be that they look at how many people cancel their annual pass before the auto-renewal date, to determine what if any deal there will be this year.

Based on that, a few friends and I have all cancelled our annual passes early.  i.e. now.  The strategy being, the more people that indicate that they won't auto-renew at the non-special rate, then the more likely Sky are to offer another good Black Friday deal.  Who knows, if this will have any effect at all - but there is absolutely no downside.  i.e. you still get full access up to the expiry date and if no Black Friday deal appears, you can still renew then anyway (or a week or two afterwards).

So I encourage everyone with annual passes to cancel them now.  Hopefully we can send some sort of signal that will benefit us all at renewal time.

Thanks for the reminder! I too got the BF special last year. Just checked my SSN account and it looks like I've got a 'Year 2' discount of $134.99 off the annual pass to be applied? Is this the same for anyone else? That discount was the same as last year...

Mine had only one year. Cancelled last week, and tbh, I may not bother. I would really only want the Big Bash Cricket (was $85 last year), possibly Supercars and Bathurst (pay for one month). Overall, did I get even $365 worth? No.

Hmmm.  I see that discount as Year 1 only. I'm not sure whether that would apply if I renewed with a new subscription.  It could mean it's applied to the current year that's about to expire, but my rate was $365, so that doesn't really make sense.

I also took up the annual pass in the BF deal last year so my current pass expires 25-Nov. I have a bad habit of forgetting about annual subscriptions so I cancel them immediately if I know I don't want to auto-renew at the standard price.

Will we start the guesses at what the BF deal will be this year? Last year I think we all paid $365 but that was when the standard price was $499 so a $135 discount. Now that the standard annual pass is $549 I would love to get a BF deal at $399 but I think its going to be more like $419 or $429.

Here's hoping for $399.

That countdown timer is for full fat Sky not just SkySportNow. As the OP indicated last year the SSN BF deal was announce very late and some people's subscription had already rolled over.

Hmmm, if you look closely, it says "*New customers only".  I wonder if that means customers brand new to SSN, or customers not auto-renewing.  Hopefully, the latter.  I guess we find out in 5 days, but I still think it's best to cancel now - unless you have stacked deals.

My guess on this, is there's a 'ceiling' = $549.99 - $134.99 = $415.  i.e. the BF deal will be less than $415 and at worse case, equal to $415.  It would be interesting to know whether the actual amount has already been predetermined - or whether my army of early cancelers will effect it in any way.

Already cancelled - not intending to renew unless the deal is very very good. Outside of AB tests and golf majors I hardly watch it. Youtube has all sorts of replays available of most sports.

Recommend anyone cancelling to also remove their credit card from their account just in case...

Interestingly, they have now removed the "*New customers only" text from that page.  Curiouser and curiouser.

The graphic still says new customers only for me. But what that actually means needs a definition, as it is a vague statement. Normally a company would have a * stating what it means, such as anyone who hasn't previously been a customer  in the last 12 months for example.

Thanks for the PSA. I have now cancelled and removed my credit card. Also now have a different credit card (that Kiwibank Airpoints thing).

Agree that this might help, wondering what their revenue/subscriber numbers have been doing?

Also wondering how they might “remember” that you had it last year (just create a new account)?

In the Q&A section of the Black Friday countdown page:

Does this offer include Sky Broadband or other Sky Products?

No, this Black Friday campaign is for Sky TV packages only. It does not include Sky Broadband, Sky Sport Now or any other Sky services.
