We recently canceled my grandmother's Sky TV service.

She had the Black Kaon box. We never recieved a return label or bag.

I called sky and their response was We are not sure why and to just recycle the black kaon box.

Should we recycle it like the Sky person said or is the person wrong and I should return it to them?

I thought it was weird that they told me to recycle it when their website says i have to return it.

I would expect to get billed for it at some absurd price if it doesn't get back and them to have no record of you ever talking to anyone and getting those instructions at all. Do not trust their CSRs at all.

Ah ok but they wouldn't send a return label because she could not do that and the CSR said she put it on the account details. But im a bit skeptical about it.

Its been about 3-4 weeks since cancellation and there has been no communication. the CSR confirmed we should have got sent an email to her email address with a return label but nothing at all.

The CSR could not help with resending it at all. I had been told by the CSR that they entered it into her account customer to recycle it and that is it.

It definitely goes against their returns article on their website that says we have to return it and they will provide a shipping label.

I remember reading a thread somewhere that Sky don't want the black boxes back as they are deleted stock and don't reuse them. Guess it's putting the hassle back onto the end user instead of themselves.

That works until the user is billed for a decoder not returned. Sky have a rep for doing this. The instructioto recycle rather than return needs to be in writing.

Yes i though she would get billed for not returning the decoder The service has been cancelled for about 4 weeks and there has been no communication about returning it.

CSR did note it down on her system but nothing in writing. My account shows not subscribed.

One thing is that the Smart Card was still working as of two weeks ago when I disconnected the decoder. Sky Sport was still working at that time.

Do i need to contact SKY again?

Nah, they don't want them back, especially like mine, since it had a dead drive. They told me I could dispose of it myself, so I did.

I had a pace, well after nearly one year since cancellation, I still have the pace!
they didn’t want it back/ told me to recycle it……I should really get around to doing that…..but might dismantle it myself / see what state the HDD is in :-)

I should really donate the remote to a good cause/ someone’s toybox.

Keep records of your communications and then recycle the box. You have met your obligations.

Had that instruction in live chat, which I've a screenshot of to dispose of it myself, was 6+ months ago... no issue.

I did my nut at Sky that they were not taking e-waste seriously and making it a customer problem... guess how many f's they gave?

Have been tempted to dob them into whomever cares about the NZ environment, is there anyone? No regulators do.

I remember when I cancelled my Sky about 6-7yrs ago there was an electronics repair shop down the road that were authorised to collect the boxes and return them them to sky. They would give you a receipt with a tracking number and you would get an email when the box was received by Sky.

Do they still do that?
