how can i lower the temp of the box, its cracked the wood its sitting on and its made a good job at it and its bloody loud when it cracks it.

Turn off it's power... and leave it turned off. :)

Is it in a sealed cabinet?

I too was concerned at its temperature, too hot to hold your hand on. However since I set the power save options so it's not spinning 24/7 the heat doesn't seem anywhere as excessive. I note later boxes have ventilation holes in the top whereas mine doesn't.
