would this card allow you to record HD content to your PC for personal use.. HD content tends to take up alot of space on the mysky HDi box

sky uses hdcp so i dont think so

Probably not, my understanding is Sky use HDCP on every channel and this does not support HDCP. It also says it supports MPEG2 encoding whereas all Sky HD content is H.264 - I would doubt this card could handle H.264 to MPEG2 transcoding on the fly.

Correct on HDCP but the h.264 thing is irrelevant, because the box has already decoding the h264 and outputting it as raw video over HDMI. If it sent the h264 over HDMI then every tv would have to have support for it built in.

As per the FAQ on that site:

Q: Why third party software show only black screen on HDMI input (Example: Microsoft Media Encoder)?

A: Based on HD Video Content Protection (HDCP) definition of HDMI input for the copyright HD video, AVerMedia application only allow to display but not support recording function. If running with other applications at this kind of input source, the video will be blocked directly in our device due to copyright consideration.

Good point, I wasn't really thinking about that at the time. The quality of the MPEG2 recordings will be slightly lower than the H.264 ones and require a lot more space for recordings.

There are very limited uses for a card such as this, while people may think it's great offering HDMI inputs the majority of content output over HDMI will have HDCP and devices that don't such as a video camera there are far easier ways of copying content.

You can (apparently) get HDCP strippers to put between the HDCP source and the recorder - much like the de-macrovision boxes that people used to have to get to transfer their VHS library to DVD when VHS started going obsolete. I remember tediously migrating a library of 30-40 tapes this way. Not sure on price or how they work in practice though - and I haven't seen one domestically.

I've used that card to record in 1080i from Sky Sports.
I've also used it to record 1080i from TV3 (which I thought wouldn't work due to the copyright flag in their stream) (these were both over hdmi)

In the end, however, I was disappointed with the quality of the mpeg encoder delivered with the card. The max bitrate was 15 Mbps, but the resulting mpg was too fuzzy (like a filter in front of the image) - clear but the grass in football had some type of blockiness, and movement was weird (not interlacing probs, or missed frames - but somehow wrong)

And the HDCP strippers I have seen are called HD-Fury (1 & 2) - 3 is coming soon.
They deliver the output over component, and I think version 3 has 5.1 DD over optical audio out.
200 - 300 USD.
