Hi There

We have just had MySky installed and the difference between it and regular sky is quite staggering really - one problem is that we have an AV amp thingy and it does not have HDMI inputs/outputs only the red/green/blue component cable ones (Also on the back of the mysky box it says it is HD component - is this different to regular component? will it work if my amp isn't HD? It doesn't say on the back if it is like on the mysky box??). This means that the sub/surround speakers etc do not work with sky now. The amp has optical inputs for the sound.

I just want to know if it's worth buying component cables, and if so would i need to get HD ones? more expensive ones? etc...

or can i just connect an optical cable from the mysky box to the amp and have the tv sound turned down??

Would that be easier...?

Need a little more info...
Such as;
what your display device is (HD TV, CRT TV, Projector,...),
whether you use your AV Amp thingy to switch sources,

The reason is there are multiple options to get the best out of your combo depending on the AV equipment you have.

I think the problem you will have when using the component outputs on the MySkyHDi box is that it won't do HD.
You have to use the HDMI output on it.

We have a HD TV, not a huge one, just 32" i think? maybe a bit bigger? It's my girlfriends and was here when i moved in so not too sure on the specs!

We use the amp to switch between dvd/wii/sky

If the component won't do hd then i think I'll just try turning the sound down and using an optical cable from the mysky box to the amp... if that will work?

I use both component & HDMI (component to the spare room)
You won't get HD on TVNZ1,2 or TV3, nor movies
But the sport comes through in HD over component.
I would just connect to the amp, and check the quality - and your TV will probably tell you what signal it's receiving (1920x1080i, 1280x720p, 576i)

I think I'll just try it with the optical cable for the sound first, as I'll need one if i go by component anyway.

Hopefully there won't be any noticeable lag.

If not I most bothered about HD sport anyway, and only the football so would wait for the world cup before sorting that out...

I have reread your OP a couple of times. What I can't quite grasp is what you are using to connect the MySky to your TV at the moment.
If I was you I would connect the Mysky directly to the TV using an hdmi cable (just a cheapish one $30-40) and then connect the optical (or coax) digital audio from the Mysky to the Amp. It means you can't use your Amp to switch sources but it will be a small inconvenience compared to the improvement in picture quality. And chances are it will be left on MySky most of the time. Don't waste your money on expensive component cables, particularly for a 32" TV.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear - it's going straight to the tv via the hdmi cable supplied by sky/vodafone...

Thanks for the advice - what you are saying is what I was asking if I could do (I only thought about that after I'd written and posted the OP), I was just concerned about audio lags/shift as that can be annoying as hell even if it's only out by a tiny amount!

As you said - no drama in having a bit of hassle when changing to dvd/wii.

There's settings you can change on the mysky for audio lags shifts, it only effects the optical. It goes from 0 ms up to 100 ms. To get it right I turned sound on TV up loud, had sound going through amp same time and then altered sound lag until could no longer hear echoe. From then on I keeped sound on TV down to 0, off. Works a treat and DD5.1 fantastic.

Got it working with the optical cable, no lag as far as i can tell... now the only problem is that it's failed on most of the 'recordings'.

Why not just connect everything to the TV and then run an optical cable from the optical out on the tv to your amp?
