Saw a promo on tv2 yesterday saying they were going to air Wimbledon. Did tvnz beat skytv to the rights?

I suspect that the cost of the live rights and the cost of the delayed rights are substantially different.
And that the number of people watching live didnt justify the price differential so Sky chose to buy the delayed rights.

Its good for TVNZ if they can monetise the rights across more NZ households than Sky can across their subscriber base.  And if Sky can monetise the delayed rights in prime time (for example) that TVNZ cant because of its existing schedule then thats great.  We call that a healthy market.

My suspicion.

I dont think they had them last year.
And if TVNZ has the live rights chances are Sky doesnt cos I dont recall Wimbledon every being a joint-live event.
In most cases where TVNZ and Sky have shared live rights they usually put out a joint press release to that effect.

I just saw an ad on TV1 earlier saying Wimbledon would be aired on TV2 this year, and some games will be streamed on TVNZ website.

I talked to Tony O'brien from sky a few days ago about this (really good guy). He said that they put a bid in for the rights to Wimbledon 2010 but were unsuccessful.

Damn. TVNZ's coverage last year was hopeless.

TVNZ hold the rights until 2014. The coverage is on TV2 this year due to Football world cup coverage on TV1.

do you know what times it's on tv2? I hope tv2 don't remove their usual lineup to cater for wimbledon.
