For those who were wondering, Uncle Bernie won't be showing F1 in HD for a couple of years: http://hd.engadget.com/2010/06/13/f1-boss-ecclestone-says-no-high-definition-feed-until-2012/.

ARGH. I love Formula 1. Imagine how awesome it would be in HD with 5.1 surround sound. The engine noise!

Nascar in HD with 5.1 is excellent - although I prefer the v8 sound to the whine of the v10/v12s of formula 1.

I think it's about time that F1 had a good look at themselves and got rid of all these air-heads running the show. High Definition is obviously the way of the future, and will become 'standard' in the future. Its a known as a rich mans sport but with a poor mans broadcast. Europe has a huge following of the F1, so i'm not quite sure how many people need to watch it for it to be broadcast in HD?? 6 Billion???

orly, shows how much attention I've paid F1 over the last few years then. Bugger all.  I prefer the throaty sound  of the v8s over the whine of the formula 1.  Is that better?

Didn't they have 3D camera mounted on some cars at a recent grand prix?

I don't really watch the motor racing, but always thought F1 would have been in HD.
3D without HD seems to miss the point somewhat.

3D cameras at the moment do not have the capability to focus manually ? it can only be done with a tape measure from a set distance. So if a car is just one metre off-line, the 3D footage will be totally out of focus ? which isn't much use for a fast-paced sport like F1.

"I think the move from SD to HD is a very small step because the camera functionality and technology is relatively similar, you are just dealing with a lot more data with the image," said Barratt.

"When you move to 3D it is a completely different world, because it involves very different technology, very different camera skills, and it is a completely different art form that is going to take a while for people to perfect. At the speeds of F1 it is going to be a very complex task.

"Some day it will come, but the cameras have to come first and then I think the sports coverage can come second. Then remember that F1 has different cameras in F1 compared to other sports."

NASCAR in 5.1 sounds great.  But as far as I know, Sky NZ only get the 2 channel audio?
