I have had mine for 12 months and the hard drive sounds like it is struggling to keep going

Harddrives fail all the time, Its not a matter of if its when.

If your box is noticeably dodgy in terms of the Hard drive, Ring sky and they will come replace it

Hmmm

I have an old grey Sky Box they left as my second decoder when I got the HD box. When it eventually dies will they give me a nice black HD box, or make me go to a standard second decoder???

Has this happened to anyone?

as an ex sky installer i have replaced some after a few days. luck of the draw really generally they are reasonably reliable. Rember if they crap out and the installer arrives he may do a hard rest which means you will loose all your recordings.

I think my grey box must be 5 years old now, I was one of the first to get it and have used it non stop since. Never turn it off.

Does anyone know how old they actually are?
