Just posted in our news section:

Orcon has announced it is building a nationwide Content Delivery Network (CDN) that will support SKY’s new online TV service, iSKY.

iSKY will let SKY subscribers access SKY content from their computers, and is set to go live before Christmas.

The CDN will employ Alcatel-Lucent’s next-generation Velocix Digital Media Delivery Platform, and is underpinned by Kordia’s nationwide data network. Ultimately the CDN will peer openly with any broadband service provider, and be able to support any content provider.

Pity that they have thrown their hats into the ring with the Sky monopoly. Maybe they should have included TiVo as well..

Unmetered access on TelstraClear would make me very happy!  Considering TCL is a reseller of Sky and that the content is delivered locally - why would it not be free?

I know TCL are doing their own PVR (eventually) and pay TV service but why can't all the ISPs agree to a peered network again?

StarBlazer: but why can't all the ISPs agree to a peered network again?

Because having a duopoly and forcing people to pay to connect to either TelstraClear or Telecom is, sadly, a valid business model. If you don't buy a service off one of them, you get no reach to any of their customers and/or content. I don't agree with it, but it does work.

Things are changing though, slowly.

@old3eyes: I don't understand your comment. Are you saying if you were selling network services and Sky came along and said "We want to buy them and we'll pay you lots of money" that you'd say no? All Orcon have done is agree to provide services to Sky. Then wrapped the whole agreement up into a nice PR piece.

I don't quite understand the point of a distributed NZ wide CDN - I didn't think there was much use of anything other than APE (and well WIX). I know there is internet exchanges for open peering ISPs in Dunedin and Christchurch now but I didn't think there were many peers? And also, don't most ISPs terminate the PPP sessions in Auckland anyway? And what about Telecom/Telstra routing - doesn't it exclusively go through a single point?

Someone in the know to clarify on the above would be awesome! I think the other internet exchanges will grow with this type of service but does that mean ISPs will run PPP termination on a regional basis?

Yeah - just read the thread (all 7 pages).  glad they have started the rollout - shame about the teething problems although I'm sure they will iron them out.  Still happy that I switched to Sky!

Zeon: This still means for Sky they only have to upload to the CDN all 10 copies of "Lame TV Show" then the CDN does the work of distributing it. Sky (understandably) don't want to be in the business of having to run a network and manage bandwidth to the Internet services. They want to give 10 episodes of "Stupid Live!" to someone and have them take care of it.

As for "lots of people still terminate PPP in Auckland" I guess that's true. Lots probably don't. With high bandwidth services, the closer you can move the delivery point to the edge the better. Local peering at exchanges will become more popular in the future. Good question though - I don't know the answer.

The Telecom-TelstraClear peering is a private peering link, yes. Is that what you mean?

(I'd originally posted that their announcement didn't mention anything about content that'll be provided, when it clearly does)

Yes, I think it's reasonable to compare the two. Both are also being built in New Zealand as well, another glaring similarity. Also as I understand it, Electrons power both networks and they've been shown a number of times to be unstable.

It's doomed.

"iSKY will let SKY subscribers access SKY content from their computers"

I'd posted something like "I don't see why everyone's talking about HD or what it will and won't show when there's no mention of what it'll deliver" but it does actually say that. It's vague, but it meant my post was wrong + stupid (a large number are)

Oh okay - not sure that counts as stupid!  I'd b interested to see whether it will be everything and almost live - or as on TV On Demand (TVNZ thingy) whether it will be selected programs only!

Stupidity is only in the ear of the beholder - or something like that!!!
