I had Mysky HDi re installed today, Have had the dual cable and quad LNB fitted in the past.

The installer only connected one of the two cables to the STB. When I questioned this he stated that the installers had a meeting this morning. And they are no longer installing the dual cable. And that Sky tv have a new compression standard which will not require the use of the second cable. All new installs from today will only be getting the one cable in.

This worries me as I presume that the SD channels will become even more pixelated than they are already.

Any thoughts?

I thought they only ever connected one. The second is for future upgrades\faults.

They connected both cables for my install in 2008. Even though its not needed

The point is that from today the second cable will not even be installed.

We only get had one cable connected to our hdi box, the installer wanted to drill a hole to outside, claimed he only had 20 minutes to do the full install.

Told him to bugger off and we'll run our own cable. My old man's a sparky and can be a bit anal about how cables are laid

Frequency shifting? We wanted Sci-Fi channel, not schi-fi installations!

We've had a single cable since we got Sky about 3 years ago (but not HDi). They guy did a very good installation and took his time.

As for pixelation, lately I find SD picture quality to be better than before. I do advise anyone with an SD STB to use s-video for smoothing pixelation. Too much sampling required with component video and timing errors especially on an HD TV.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Yes, common practise when installing sky in a new house is to run at least 1x dual RG6 cable for Sky Tv.

We were also told that it would be better to run 2x dual cables if possible for future expansion, although this is not required.

The news of using only 1 RG6 cable is interesting, and I wonder if that means that Sky installers will no longer install the quad band? LNB.

I now understand that a single coax run will be the norm when the old twin stock runs out. Sky have access to another transponder and are installing new encoders to squeeze more channels out of existing bandwidth. Rather than using the other satellite the twin throat sees.

Is isn't anything to do with Unicable is it? That is probably unlikely (would require new LNBs) however would be awesome if it was!
