For the last week or so, the HDCP handshake between MySky and our TV set has failed.
(Sky error 442)

TV set is a 5 year old Philips 42" Plasma. As we only have 1 HDMI imput, we use a 3 in, 1 out HDMI splitter box.

We have done the obvious and replaced the splitter and HDMI cables from MySky to the splitter box, but still get the failure.

Does anyone have any solutions/ideas?

I see no one has yet responded to this one. Just one obvious possibility that you may have already tried. Have you plugged the MySkyHDi HDMI output directly into your TV to see if the problem is still present?

A process of elimination is required. The order I would try things in is:

1. Try the MySky box directly into the TV
2. If you have something else that outputs over HDMI with HDCP, try it in the same output
3. If you have, or know someone with, another TV with HDMI inputs take your MySky box to that TV and see whether it works - no sat dish connection etc should be needed if you are just playing something already recorded.

If (1) works it's the switch box, If (1) fails but (2) and/or (3) works it's likely the TV, and if they all fail then its the MySky Box.

If the switch box has failed, forego it or replace it.

If the TV has failed then it's either a new TV or, if it will take HD over component, a converter like the HDFury might also work (*) -it takes HDMI in, handshakes the HDCP, and spits out HD video over component.

If the MySky box has failed, then ring Sky for a replacement - they are usually pretty good about that sort of thing.

(*) Disclaimer: I haven't tried an HDFury myself, but have heard good things about it from someone who has. A quick google search shows the cost is around $US 160 + shipping. I am toying with buying one currently, together with a component video splitter/amplifier box from Jaycar, so I can stream Sky to multiple TVs in HD, which is what a work colleague has already done.

Sorry I left something out . Before you go through any of the steps I mentioned above, since from your post you obviously have multiple HDMI devices, take the cable off something that you know still works and use it to connect the MySky box to the TV. It's possible it's just a bad cable.

Thanks for your replies.

We have changed the splitter box; changed the HDMI cable and now tried each device direct to the HDMI input in the TV.

None of those options worked.

Looking more and more like a TV motherboard issue.

I'm not sure it's worth spending big money on this old plasma. If you could pass it on to somebody with tame requirements who doesn't need HDCP that may be a better outcome.

I think that is for an old version. The current model is HDFury3 which is US$249 including postage. Make sure you ask for the UK plug.

Had it happen on LG plasma. Unplugging the TV from the power supply for 5 minutes fixed it. Just another idea to try.

Re: The HDFury, I checked with the mate who has it. He has the Fury2, not the Fury3. The difference between that and the Fury3 is apparently the number of HDMI inputs (2 vs 1), deep colour support, and 5.1 sound (c.f., 2 channel). It also costs quite a bit more.

He landed his Furt2 a couple of months ago for $NZ240 all up, and is fairly happy with it. It does 720p, 1080i and 1080p - so provided your TV will take HD over component it could be a solution. Of course, given prices, if the TV is old you might just be better replacing it than spending this sort of money to keep it in service.

I am looking at buying a Fury myself for a HTPC build I am contemplating, and pairing it with a Hauppauge HD PVR for connection to MySky and a 4x2 HDMI matrix splitter from Jaycar. Add in one of the Hauppauge quat terrestrial/satellite tuners, and cable to a WD TV Live in the bedroom and I should be good to go. Still at the research stage, budget and time permitting I may do the build in the new year.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. (especially JimmyH) for your suggestions.

Bit the bullet and got the main board replaced yesterday with a used one.

All okay now.
