Currently I have mysky HDi and I want to record the perfect 1080i quality onto my blu ray recorder to burn it onto disc.  I have a Panasonic DMR-BW850 blu ray recorder, a LG 42LD460 TV and of course the mysky HDi decoder

My arrangement at the moment is:

1. From Sky decoder to TV by HDMI
2. From Decoder to blu ray recorder by SCART to AV-components.
3. And finally from recorder to TV by HDMI.

The problem at the moment is that the blu ray recorder is that the AV is not picking up the picture in full HD so I'm receiving standard quality picture.  Also the recorder wouldn't record in HD mode when it is switched to the AV mode.

The blu ray recorder only has 2 AV components in, a DV in but only one HDMI OUT.

So my question is is there any other arrangements that anyone can help me on to record using the blu ray recorder and get the same quality as broadcast (even if it means I have to buy other components).

Most Sky HD channels use copy protection as what you want to do is not allowed - by law format shifting of video is actually illegal.

I believe you can do this on 1,2 and 3 in HD and possibly Sky Sport as these have no copy protection. A search on here will show various other discussions covering exactly the same issue.

If you want to record Sky content in HD your only option is to use a 3rd party STB or PC that can pick up DVB-S2 signals instead of yuutr MySky box. Again this is discussed in severl other threads on here.

Your Panny has no HD imputs. Other than recording TV 1, 2 & 3 over the air, you have no way of getting an HD signal into it irrespective of copy protection. Even if you have an unprotected signal, that you are legally allowed to record, there is no physical connector that would allow it.

I don't know much about the option sbiddle recommends, but on the assumption the hardware is available to you, it should work.

You do however have another option, a PC-based solution. This is what I am considering/pricing for myself at present. First you need hardware that will take HDMI input, strip the copy protection, and output unprotected HD. That does exist, from several sources, of which the HDFury range seems most common. Then you need a capture device that will capture the HD signal. There are two brands I am aware of so far, the Hauppauge HD PVR and the Blackmagic intensity. I would have thought this was less dodgy, in terms of Sky's TOS etc, than using your Sky card in unauthorised set top boxes.

Sbiddle makes an important point about legality - and you need to take your own advice on this if you are concerned.

Personally, I can't quite see the difference between recording using a laptop, and using a DVD recorder or a VCR myself. Sky are quite happy about DVD recorders, and even supplied cables for and connected it when they did my install. Provided you only record content you have paid for, for the purposes of watching later, and don't do something dumb like upload/torrent the recordings, I can't see Sky being too concerned in practice. Much the same as a couple of years ago, when it was similarly illegal to transfer CDs to your Ipod - but the recording companies didn't really care about this in practice, and were more focused on proper piracy.

Thats the only way to do it, that I know of anyway.  Ive done it with a vuduo pvr with skycard in the slot.  Records to a .TS file on the hdd, then you download it to your pc over the lan, approx 7Gb to 10Gb for a movie.  Use a program like TsMuxer Gui to convert the .TS file to a Bluray image, then ImgBurn to burn the image to bluray disk.  Of course you need a bluray burner in your pc.

With the vu-duo pvr, could you transfer the .ts files onto say a usb?

What kind of usb?  I wouldnt transfer them to a usb memory stick, you'll be waiting for hours.  If you plug a external hdd into a usb port on the vuduo you should be able to, although I havent tried it as I always just transfer the recordings over the lan to my pc.  You can access the vuduo hdd just like you do a windows share, eg \\ipaddress\
