Is this the newer satellite of the Optus range? I believe this one has way more capacity for HD.

What is the lifespan of the current satellite?

Yes D3 is the newest in the fleet at 156E where it flys with C1, it is identical in configuration and performace to D1 (160E) which Sky currently uses, just not as much traffic on it, so room for expansion. As far as the satellite is concerned it has no idea if its SD or HD thats passing through it.

Cyril,

Are most Sky LNB's pointing at D3 as well as D1?

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Hi, Matt, yes all new LNB that that have been installed in the last 5yrs see both orbital slots. The LNBs are quite distinct in that they have an oval face, the earlier ones only had one output, the latter ones (last 18months) have four outputs to support one or two MySky HDI or several standard boxs.

When we had Mysky HDi installed again in October I was told by the installer that Sky had changed their plans, and were not going to be using the new satellite. And that sky had a new compression standard they were going to use instead.

This was after I asked why he was not fitting the second cable that was already wired into the house from a previous install. I was told they had an installers meeting earlier that morning where they were given that information an instructed not to fit the second cable in new installs as it would no longer be needed.

I was at a Sky installers place a couple of weeks ago, and he was on the phone to Sky getting his sat finder tuned into another satellite. I'm not sure which one or what for, but it was one that his little unit did not have on it before.

Shifting all current Sky transponders to DVB-S2 and H.264 would mean all the old standard definition only set top boxes would be useless as DVB-S/mpeg2 only. Replacing all these boxes would cost maybe $50 million. Maybe the installer had no real clue at all.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I've only got one cable and two myskys, if they start using new satellite what happens there as my understanding is it can only tune into one satellite at a time with one cable, and two programs that are being viewed/ recorded could be on different satellites.

I'd say they've got thousands of homes to visit for second cable install and I haven't heard boo out of them.
