Hi All,
I recently purchased an Onkyo Amp and happily plugged all my HDMI sources in. TV is a V series 40" Sony.

All went well for the first few days, DD audio through HDMI, TV controls volume on receiver etc very cool.

However since then we have been getting random HDMI dropouts when watching Sky. While a show is playing the TV will go blank, then the MySKY HDCP error will come up, then picture will come back. During this time the HDMI light on the Amp will be flashing, indicating a renegotiation.

Issue is intermittent, appears to happen more often with recordings.

Having done a bit of research I am not the only person with this issue:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=106&topicid=69807
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1151969

and numerous others.

The decoder is the standard MySKY HDI box, with latest firmwares (I believe).

I initially suspected the Amp, but I am able to watch other HDMI sources (Blu-Ray, Laptop using HDMI) without any issue for hours on end.

Things I have tried:
1. Moved decoder to better ventilated location
2. Changed output to 720p, 1080i and Auto
3. Tried different HDMI ports on Amp and TV

I have emailed and spoken to Sky and explained the issue. The lady I spoke to couldn't understand how I was possibly getting an HD picture through a receiver and even checked if I had an HD ticket.

When I explained the issue again I was told that the box is designed to only be plugged into a TV and they wouldn't send a technician out to troubleshoot customer equipment and that the HDMI/HDCP problem is not their fault.

When asked, plugging the decoder into the TV is the only situation they will support and do anything about.

When I plug it into the TV it works fine, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having an HDMI Receiver.

Has anyone else had the same experience and had anything more helpful from Sky?

I see I could purchase a 3rd party receiver (like the vu duo) but suspect that would not sit well with the wife.

Cheers,
-Jeff

Jaxson: Tried different / higher quality cables?

2nd that, had major issues with my PS3 HDMI connection with the TV, it would randomly drop and get a blank TV screen. Thought it was the age of the PS3 and was about ready to throw it out the window!!

Just happened to rearrange the front room a couple months back and afterwards the SkyHDi starting dropping, but the PS3 was stable...

Turns out my $99 Sony cable was at fault and since swapping out both have behaved properly.

Have swapped them around, but I will purchase all new this week and give it another stab.

I normally just buy Computer Dynamix 2m ones which are 1.3b. May as well buy some 1.4 rated, they're only a few dollars more. Any complaints? Their gear is normally really high quality.

I don't intend to spend $200 or anything ridiculous on 'audiophile' grade stuff.

 Thanks,
-Jeff

Yeah sounds like a rude thing to say but in these instances it really is the best initial step to take. You might get better results with a different, possibly even a really cheap cable. I think from memory you should just aim for the V1.3b compliant ones, though as they are probably all from China there is often no guaranteeing that they are that inside.

Being digital, once you have hdmi cables working you then won't notice any difference going to a better quality one. That doesn't mean that manufacturing defects etc can't happen so it really does pay to try and try again until you either sort it or rule out cables altogether. Some devices are more picky than others with the hdcp handshaking over hdmi so it's typically these ones that give grief.

Temperature can be another one, so make sure your components are suitably ventilated too.

Cheers, cables are on their way so will have a play tomorrow and let you know how I go.

Appreciate the help.

Regarding Ventilation: TV and AMP are fine, and have raised sky decoder up and moved to somewhere better ventilated so hopefully shouldn't be a major.

HDMI is meant to be easy isn't it!

Cost doesn't always equate to quality for cables. I have had better luck with some cheap generics that I got at 3 for $40 from Jaycar than I have with the significantly more expensive ones (2 of which have been defective). I would try a cable off one of the devices that is fine, so that you know the cable is fine, to confirm/eliminate cables as the source of the issue.

The other outside possibility could be that one socket on the reciever is a bit defective (the MySky one obviously), which would explain the MySky connection being flaky while other devices are fine. If switching the cable doesn't resolve it, it might be worth then trying a different HDMI port on the reciever.

It was an HT package, the HT-S5305. Amp is a HT-R538.

Have tried swapping ports on the Receiver, no difference. Cables arriving shortly so will update tonight.

very very interesting....

have have an Onkoyo receiver, Samsung TV and mySky... it seems to happen with the HDCP HD channels (TV1, 2 and 3)

To get around it, i'll change the input to AV1 and then HDMI. That'll usually get it right. It never used to do this.
