from @SKYNZ
ESPN has just gone widescreen! There should be a noticeable improve in quality too. NM

Not quite ESPN in HD, but it's a start

first real proof will be the champion league games, they were almost unwatchable you couldn't even tell who the players were.

yay, I'll be able to see the cards they're playing in poker. On wide screen programs they were center cutting it and couldn't see cards on left side.

why is ESPN now even worse to watch . tried watching the La Liga this morning, the first game had black borders with ESPN on them on both sides of the picture and you couldnt even read the score and the players kept disappearing behind the borders , yet second game fine , same with the 6 nations, the  Italy game unwatchable, yet second game fine. why is it like this and is there anything i can do to fix it

The NBA is much more watchable now. the game last week you could barely make out the players. much better in yesterdays game. pity boston lost though.

watching Italy vs Ireland replay now. Picture quality seems noticably worse than even SD games on other channels. It's like watching a game from the 70s.

The picture quality of the Mersielle - Man United game on at the moment is poor, it seems all fuzzy, almost out of focus.

That's because you're seeing

PAL -> NTSC -> Pal conversion going on.. NTSC is bad at the best of times.

Unlikely to be that as the ESPN we get here is ESPN Australia so I assume their feed for the above would be direct from the UK /PAL country..

Even So, you still have at least one conversion from NTSC to pal in there... So don't expect crystal clarity.

NTSC has never been known for it's quality

Why would there be a NTSC conversion in there?  The UK is PAL, along with Europe... Aus is also PAL, same as NZ.  Unless of course the signal is being bounced from the US, but that would be unlikely as ESPN is based in Europe.

Actually NTSC ceased to exist a couple of years ago when they turned off analog TV and went ATSC so there should be no NTSC in the supply chain at all..
