It seems the bars are grey when I set the brightness of the TV to resolve all the shadow detail, and if I turn it down to make the bars not show, I am missing shadow detail.

Any reason why the bars would be grey? This happened with one of my old dvd players, when I replaced it with another, the problem was gone. Whats going on with they sky box that would make the bars grey? Its often even grey compared with the added letterboxing in music vids etc on one of the music channels.

are you using an s-video or component connection? s-video cables can cause big colour issues

Regs: are you using an s-video or component connection? s-video cables can cause big colour issues

At the moment composite because I dont seem to be able to get component out of the sockets on the back and the cheap-ass installer wouldnt leave a scart to component cable.

Its only a 21" but seems to do a decent job of composite compared to most CRT's of the era (back when they started to make them really cheap and nasty)

Use s-video. Composite combines chrominance and luminance into 1 signal, then the TV has to split it up again.

Phone Sky and complain that the installer would not give you component video on your TV. For me the installer left a few cables, because I told him we're going to get a large LCD (which we eventually did).

Which set top box do you have? Perhaps it does not have component video. When I signed up I asked for the small silver Pace box and was told I'll get whatever the installer happens to have in his van.

Its a mysky hdi, so has all the outputs - I will try svideo once I have picked up a non crap cable. The only 2 I have here are $2 shop ones which get massive interference on the picture because they have no shielding. I dont really see how composite could cause the letterbox bars to be grey however, as that doesnt involve the chroma at all. Problem is the box is now located downstairs with a cable to upstairs and I dont have anything svideo thru the walls, just some coax with RCA adapters on the end for component/composite.

I will busting open one of the many xbox scart adaptors I have and rewiring it for component later. Seems stupid that I can only get "HD" component from the nice RCA sockets onthe back of the mysky and have to resort to europe's worst idea ever to get SD component.

Tried turning on the picture AI of the TV, and that just makes the bars come and go depending on the rest of the pictures brightness.

I cant get it to give me 576i out of it, and the TV doesnt do progressive. Only SD is on those bloody scart plugs

It will be eventually, but I would like it to work properly with what I have. Its only a bedroom TV so no need to waste money replacing it with something which will then have crap sound so I have to get a home theater in there etc. I still need to sort out getting HDMI out to the workspace since at the moment I have a junk old modulator to get picture out there, which is higher priority than getting another TV for the house at the moment ;)
