Recently won a competition with Sky so we got the upgrade from standard to My sky+ free or something like that.

With the old setup we had it setup going from the satellite to our ground floor lounge going through our tv and then back out to magic land to an output in the master bedroom upstairs where we could see whatever was being displayed downstairs.

Went Sky jack > Decoder > standard TV cable > Output jack > Upstairs jack > Old CRT TV

So the Sky guy comes along and does the My Sky+ install and asks if we're outputting it to anywhere else in the house and if so it wont work for some reason and you'll need a $50 part to do so. I turned him down since it wasn't critical at all to us.

Now we've decided to get another TV for upstairs which will likely get used a lot more so we want to try and get it set up again.

Is the $50 part from Sky the only way? Im assuming not, this is where you guys come in

When you say standard TV Cable, do you mean Coax aerial cable?, if so, then paying sky the $50 is most likely the easiest way, unless your willing to run some new cables, and if the new TV is a HD TV, it might be well worth running some new cables for HD picture quality.

Yea thats the one, never got round to learning what its called...

The "new" TV will be the current 37" Samsung for upstairs and will likely get another Samsung for downstairs

I have been tempted with a whole media center type thing, what would be the best way to go about that?

Other then that through Sky is still the best way?

The part the Sky guy was talking about is just an RF modulator.  The MYSky HDi & MySky+ units don't have an RF output like the older decoders.  So the RF modulator takes the composite video signal and analog audio (yellow/white/red plugs) and converts it into an RF (ie TV aerial type) signal.  This would allow you to have the setup exactly as you did before with the bedroom TV getting the same picture as the lounge TV.

THE BIG DRAWBACK is that an RF signal has the poorest picture quality of any video connection.... it gets the job done but it aint too pretty!  As such you may be disappointed with the quality of the picture in the bedroom, especially on a HDTV.

The best way to get Sky to the bedroom in better quality would be to run different cables but without knowing your situation it's hard to say as  this may be difficult and or expensive. There are wireless alternatives as well.

As for a media center, if you want access to this from both TVs then you still have the problem of some kind of cabling between the lounge and bedroom, unless you go the wireless route.

Give us a better idea of what you'd like to be able to do on each TV and the practicality of running cables and see what gets suggested :)

Cheers for clearing that up, seems like you can get them for $30 from jaycar so thats $20 saved.

Indeed, going back to SD material on sky is bad enough after getting the HD ticket.. running $100 20m HDMI cables probably isnt a possibility value for money wise.

Not sure if its possible anyway, the house has multiple ceilings/roofs so would be difficult to run cables at best and I doubt wireless HD A/V receivers are that cheap?

Fairly sure we'd be happy just running with the RF modulator getting Sky cloned to upstairs

Just so you know if this

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=LM3873&keywords=modulator&form=KEYWORD

is the one you saw on Jaycar, it requires this

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productResults.asp?keywords=MP-3147&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=21&SUBMIT.y=10

to power it... which costs... around $20!

Yeah wireless HD transmitters ain't cheap and if the RF signal is enough for you... sweet!

I got my sky+ installed for free aswel and it is amazing but yes i had to buy that $50 modulator so that i could transfer the picture onto another 2 tvs. Since buying the modulator have decided to get multiroom installed so i get the free HD ticket. Not a very wise choice buying both the modulator and getting multiroom.

At first when the modulator was installed and the picture was transfered to another 2 tvs the image quality was shocking it was worse than rabit ears not sure what the sky installer then done but the image is but up to scratch now

Sorry if I am misreading something.

The item in the first link looks like it is an RF modulator from another antenna or BNC connection (I couldn't see any other inputs)? Also the power adaptor required for the first item needs to be 100mA for 12VDC, rather than 400mA doesn't it?

For the situation above, wouldn't it be better to use this modulator:

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=LM3879&keywords=RF+modulator&form=KEYWORD

Or this extender using CAT cable (although the IR may not work with Sky)

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=QC3681&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=1014#4

They are more expensive, so if Sky have a part that is $50, I wonder exactly what it is, since I am also looking to get this done at my parents' house for their mysky+

Sorry again if I have misunderstood anything

The $50 from sky is a modulator so it takes te signal from sky and sends it out as RF.

As stated above, the quality would not be good.
You would be much better going with one of the Balun type things

I use something similar to this (but mine had analog audio as well)
http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=QC3683&keywords=cat+5+component&form=KEYWORD

It would mean running cat 5 to the other TV, but the HD comonent output will look great, and you get the IR extender as well.

The only problem with that model is the one RCA for audio. You could combine L+R at the Sky end, and split it back out at the other.

This is the model I use, but can't see it at jaycar anymore (it does use 2 x cat 5 cables, but it more flexible)

Did you read the description in the first link I posted???  Here it is:

This modulator converts a Video and Audio signal to an RF "Antenna" type signal to connect directly into a TV which has a TV aerial socket. Channel 0 and 1.
- Requires 12VDC @ 100mA
- Use our plugpack MP-3147
- Mono for CCTV
- Stereo for Home Theatre

Unless the descripton is wrong, I do believe this will take a composite video signal and analog audio signal and modulate it to an RF signal.  Also the plugpack I linked to is the one Jaycar themselves suggest to use!

As you suggest there are better/higher quality ways to send the signal but the OP didn't seem to want to run any new cables, just use the existing coax, hence my suggestions.

I was questioning the product description/capabilities, not your suggestion.

I couldn't see why they could recommend an adaptor which doesn't seem to be matched.

I couldn't see from the picture how the source would connect if using composite/RCA.

Based on the description, it should suit OP's requirements, you're right, and that was never questioned.
