Hi

We have had our sky decoder for about 3 years now and have never had it plugged into a phone line. The other night we had friends over and we ordered a box office movie via the phone. When we got asked why we booked via the phone and then telling him it was not connected to the phone line, we got a spiel about how the boxes needed to be connected to get updates to the software on them.

Questions:
a: Is this hogwash
b: If this is true, how do I tell if I have the latest version of the firmware/software on the box
c: If I plug this into the phone line, how do I force it to update

The decoder is a Pace DS230NNZ

Cheers

Hey.

My understanding is that the phone line is only used for booking extra content/channels. Any updates are sent via Sat.

I have had naked dsl and myski now for over a year with no problems.

Cheers

Firmware updates are all sent over the air, they do not use the phoneline.

From the start (4 years?) I've had no phone line connected since I'm using VoIP. Same silver Pace box as you. No issues.

Had our old black decoder since 1998, only ever connect phone line when wanting to update to a different package. Never had any problems. (I wonder if they'll give us a free new decoder one day)

Yes

It isn't true

c: If I plug this into the phone line, how do I force it to update

You don't/can't. Updates come over the air.

I had that decoder, but got them to swap it for a Motorola. Too many problems after a firmware update - principally, about every second program I booked for recording seemed to result in the preview channel being recorded rather than the program I wanted.
