Hello,

Thank you in advance for any answers and apologies if this thread exists anywhere else in the forum.
I have done multiple searches through my manuals, friends, other forums. I have not rung sky yet.

My equipment:
Mysky- no HD ticket.
Hdmi connection to Marantz Nr1602 Receiver
Hdmi out from receiver to LG 3d tv. (47LW4500)
Speakers Klipsch HDT-500.(5.1)
2nd zone speakers not connected at this stage as I trouble shoot this fault.

My Problem:
Basically, I *believe* I have a reasonable ability in setting up hi-fi etc, I have a problem where currently if the amp is in auto mode, I select a movie from sky movies that should be broadcast in 5.1, the receiver distributes it in stereo only. If I change the channel to channel 1, 2 or 3 it will broadcast it in dolby digital.

I have confirmed the receiver operation is good in auto, the sony blu ray player in auto will play my movies in DTS, dolby 5.1 and so on. I have checked that the sound coming out of the sky box is dolby not mpec/pcm on both HDMi and Spdif outputs (not currently using optical though) in the setup menu.

If I manually change the surround mode on the receiver to DTS or dolby whilst watching a movie its clear that it's not  the real deal. Also, I have had a look through the marantz manual and have the sound passing through amp as opposed to the tv, I hear sometimes if the ARC is enabled, the tv will tell the amp I cant process dolby and thus the stereo output occurs.

I am a little stumped, my next option is to ring sky themselves, but this is a hard one to diagnose, it has surely just got to be a setting problem I am unaware of. Thanks for taking the time to read, and help , if you can. I also don't want to run optical from the sky as my xbox is pre HDMI, I am using optical from the xbox in to the only optical input on the receiver.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Dolby digital is only on the 1080i streams I think, i.e., you need the HD ticket.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I think you may find the issue lies with the lack of HD ticket. The FTA channels are broadcast in HD whether you have hd ticket or not. I am pretty sure the non-hd movie channels only carry stereo signal...

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yes, I thought that as well, however after googling and seeing some replies on this forum it appears that the HD ticket should be separate to the 5.1. It may be worth me confirming that with sky, however.

Has anyone else confirmed this?

I have an optical connection to my Sony amp from mysky which is selected Dolby pro on the amp. Mysky is on mpeg/pcm setting (louder). I get 5.1 sound on all channels as it re-produces it. I've done tests on settings to dolby on mysky & auto (which gets dolby signal if mysky is on dolby) etc.. & i dont notice any difference.

Perhaps set your amp to a dolby 5.1 setting rather than rely on mysky to make the dolby? (Which i have done)

Thats a good suggestion, and I can select the amp to output in dolby if I choose. However, watching iron man 2 this afternoon, whilst they were flying around, there was no distinctive woosh sound as you would expect. There was however, music and general noises as the amp tries to seperate a stereo signal into surround sound. Are you sure your amp isn't just doing this? That wouldn't be true surround sound then.

I am going to ring sky tomorrow, I think that with holding 5.1 without a HD ticket is actually a pretty good explanation now the more I think about it. Clever but cheeky.

I'm not familiar with your amp & everyones setup is different. I have got HD ticket now (for picture) but before HD ticket i was getting tv3 (amp in auto/mysky on dolby) & the dolby light came on amp (nothing on movie channels). In that setup you should be getting 5.1. As i remember talking to sky about all this i think you do need hd ticket for 5.1 in sky movie channels with HD content. That is wrong i think but it makes you buy the HD ticket. Sky is not your friend. :-)

My amp could be doing this (dolby pro logic II setting) but everything is relevant to the movie/program i was watching. Subwoofer was doing the booms well. The left to right & forward to back flybys or cars etc was fine. It's doing what it should &
sounds great.

Simply put:

There is nothing wrong with your set-up. SD = 2.0, HD = 5.1 audio.

Exception is channels 1, 2 and 3 are broadcast in HD by default and will send 5.1 audio.

Movies and Sports without HD ticket will send 2.0 audio.

Channel 3 sends a slightly different 5.1 audio to channel 1 and 2 (Just because NZ likes to be consistent! /sarcasm) but that is a whole other topic?

Thanks everyone.

*update*

Have rung and spoken with sky, they had no advice about the problem and didn't think the HD ticket would matter, in fact as I don't have sky they suggested I not get the ticket as its ten dollars for only 2 channels in HD. I took a punt, as I wanted to confirm the fault- hey presto I now have surround sound.

Shame on you sky. 5.1 shouldn't have to be paid for, and it should be on more channels.

That doesn't make sense. In your original post you said you have MySky - No HD ticket.??????

Haha..yeah you are right, I had a beer after work and its hot here....you can understand?.....

I meant as I didn't have sky sport- hence only 2 movie channels offered in HD(basically paying 5 bucks a month extra per channel). If I had sport, then 3 more sport channels in HD. Hey, maybe it will be a good excuse to get sport.......

Do it. Sport in hd is awesome, the NFL looks especially good.
