Hey guys and girls

I have a quick (hopefully) question, My partner and I will be getting skytv (myhdi) installed in our flat on friday. My flatmates don't wish to pay towards it and if this is the case I don't want them watching sky. Can you lock the decoder so when you turn it on you need to put a pin? or will I have to pin lock each channel? Or should I just take out the card?

If you take the card out then you are screwed for recording whilst the card is in your pocket.....

Or just stop caring. As long as you can watch what you want, when you want why care if you flat mate watches it when you're not hom. It don't cost you any more.

Cut them a deal.. You pay for sky and they do all the chores (dishes, cleaning etc).. Problem solved :)

It is stupid that there is no STB lock other than removing the card which means no recordings. What if I want to lock the STB so the kids do not watch TV instead of homework?

So yea, hide the remote is probably your best bet. But then again a universal remote is cheap to buy.

If you really want to enforce it, get something like a lockable 19" server case (not a full rack, just a case) on which the door blocks the remote control, or a lockable drinks cabinet so it doubles as protecting your drinks.

I know what you mean, in South Africa we shared pay TV across 2 flats and the guy in the middle did not want to pay but anyway tapped into our cable. We liked the same programmes, and there was only a couple of channels anyway but they were really good.

As a kid I've tapped into a neighbour's TV with a directional high gain omnipolar antenna over about 30m through walls picking up the leakage out of his UHF cable between the STB and TV (long before HDMI and when component was barely affordable).

You can never have enough Volvos!

That made me chuckle and feel quite nostalgic. I used to have an Apple 2 in the mid-1980s which, in addition to the composite connection, had a dodgy internal PAL card so it could connect to an NZ colour TV - a Philips K9 none the less. That thing leaked Rf like you wouldn't believe. My parents had a bedroom TV with bunny ears pretty much at the other end of the house, and you could tune it into the Rf the computer was chucking out and read what was on the screen!

You can go into the Menu and lock every channel. Then when you come home unlock the channels you want to view :P
