Hey guys,

My current Sky box uses S-video out, but I'm getting a new receiver (component and HDMI only) so was wondering if there is a newer box out with these newer connectors? I don't want to have MySky btw, just the standard subscription.

Thanks for any help

Talk to Sky, threaten to quit your contract... and see what they do.
I know it seems somewhat drastic, but they'd rather keep you and your monthly payments - even if they need to update your box.

What receiver are you getting? Some still have S-Video...

All the newer generation boxes (ie last ~8 or so years) have component. It's only the MySky boxes that have HDMI.

I haven't decided on the receiver yet, it will be fairly low end though as my budget isn't too big. Even if it does have S-video though I'm still pretty keen on being able to use component connectors instead. If I give sky a call are they likely to upgrade me to one with component out for free?

From the other thread, please don't create multiple threads.

donthaveacow: Hey guys,

Planning on upgrading the TV and receiver but am a bit unsure with how to connect up SKY to this new equipment. I've got an old Sky Box with a S-video and two RCA audio plugs going directly into a CRT TV atm.

Do I want to plug the SKY Box directly into the new TV? Or into the receiver?

B1GGLZ: Depends a lot on what TV you get.
I have a Sony EX720 and connect the Sky Box (small silver Pace) to the TV via SCART to Component cable for Video (better than SVID ) and the two RCA leads (Red & White) for Audio. The TV then passes the audio to the Receiver/Amp via optical cable. The Pace box unfortunately doesn't have HDMI out which would be better still.
If you were to upgrade to MySky HDi or MySky+ then you would connect Sky to Receiver via HDMI and Receiver to Tv via HDMI.

donthaveacow: Does this sound okay to connect like this:
Sky component out to receiver's component in.
Blu-ray player HDMI out to receiver's HDMI in.

Receiver's component out to TVs component in.
Receiver's HDMI out to TVs HDMI in.

And I would then just be able to switch to the appropriate component source on the receiver and TV to watch Sky and the appropriate HDMI source on the receiver and TV to watch Blu-rays?

donthaveacow: The above would be assuming Sky give me a box with component out ports, and also my receiver will not be high end enough to feature up-sampling unless there's a cheap model with this.

I thought the questions were different enough to be separate threads in separate sections...

I was disappointed when I tried component video on my 42" HD LCD, and stayed with s-video. There is a long explanation, but essentially the component output is still SD and does not map straight onto the LCD where as s-video requires some processing to get the colour space which effectively filters the difference in resolution.

The small silver set top box has component and is the one that gets installed when you have an HD LCD but not MySky. You can phone then up and say you have upgraded your TV and would like to have component video, but you will have to pay I think $50 for the call-out fee and they might even charge you for the upgrade. Worth a try. Advantage of the small silver box is it has a faster processor so menus scroll faster (but still slow since the menu overhaul ~8 years ago).

You can never have enough Volvos!
