The current Sky promotion offered via the media is:
 Installation, Sky Sport and Rugby Channel free for your first month. (terms & conditions apply)

However I was surprised this morning when a Sky pamphlet ended up in the letter box offering a deal which
appears too good to be true.

"Sky now comes with free installation + Platinum Sport for 6 months" *  (note the *)
"And your pick of any 2 of these great premium channels, all free for 6 months" *  (note the *)
Soho
Rialto
Arts
Sky Movies
This offer (code 6891) expires on the 13th March 2012 and is offered to new customers and former direct customers.
* After the 6 month free promotional period, full Sky subscription rates apply. (this in small print)

I now gather that because you signed this particular deal, after 6 months it is not a matter of no longer wanting Platinum Sports and the two premium channels ... you have them and you MUST pay for the last 6 months?
Have I understood the "special conditions" correctly?

AFAIK, the contract with sky is just for the basic plan, so you could remove the sports etc whenever you like. However, you would have to call sky up and ask them to remove it. there is no option to remove parts of your package online.
That is how it normally works at least.
However, without reading the Ts&Cs of this particular offer it?s hard to say

Anyone know what a "former direct customer" is?

I think you are required to keep the channels after six months.

Former direct customer I would say is somebody who has signed up with Sky directly in the past and disconnected (vs. somebody who signed up with Sky through Vodafone then disconnected).

You are required to be a customer for those 6 months to get the channels for free. If you leave Sky before the 6 months is up then you'll be charged for those channels for the 6 months.

You just need to remember to call them during the last month and un-subscribe from those extras so that you aren't charged for the 7th month.

And yeah, a former direct customer would be one who was a Sky customer, rather than the customer of someone who resold the Sky service (Telecom, TelstraClear, etc).

To clarify, you need to give a 1 month notice for ending a free channel so after 5 months give notice (assuming you do not want to keep them).

There is also this month a promo for existing customers to have 1 premium channel for $1 (Rugby included only if you already have sport, and I think Arts is excluded).

All these promotions, does this mean they want to postpone people signing up for IGLOO which is supposed to launch within a few months?

Thanks for your input fellow Geekzoners and for your various views. I believe that Sky Representatives view this thread? What about some input to clear up the confusion?

I had a similar deal (previously) and you could drop the premium channels after the free period. However I then wanted MySKY on a deal from HN and they would not do that deal while I was still on the original Sky deal. They agreed to put me on the normal Sky prices and then do the HN MySky deal but I obviously had to forgo some of the benefits of the original deal.
