I sent off some queries to Igloo (via their site) so as to get information that would enable me to decide between Igloo and Freeview when the analogue transmissions are turned off. Did not get any good answers - only excited tale as to how great Igloo would be, especially by way of access to some Sky channels (light Sky?) on a month by month prepay basis plus movies and sporting events.

I was, however, told that the Igloo tuner is not/will not be a recorder. I was told, though, that it will have "pause live TV" capability (have to plug in a USB stick). And, although I asked what "free to air" channels Igloo will transmit I did not get an answer. I wished to know whether the free to air channels that Igloo referred to as those it would transmit would be all of the (current) terrestrial Freeview channels - after all they are all free. I just got a speil that directed me to the Freeview site to find out what (Freeview) channels were available.

Have mulled it over. Seems to me that Igloo has to be taken as a supplement to Freeview. And, that is only really necessary if I wish to utilise the extra options (some Sky channels, movies, sports). If I wish to have the ability to record anything then I need a Freeview approved PVR or twin tuner device - I am aware of the options on the market. And, it seems that none of the Igloo transmissions - including the "extras" - will be able to be recorded (save for the pause live TV option - that is not really a recording function as one would presently use it).

So, guess that if I need acess to all the "freebie" digital options I shall have to have an Igloo tuner plus a Freeview tuner/recorder.

Does this sound like a reasonable of my options?

Thanks for any thoughts and comments.

If you want a PVR that just works with Freeview there are plenty of options avaliable, some freeview approved, some not

If you time things right you can pick up a Tivo from Noel Lemmings or Bond and Bond on special @$200, usual price $300

I've had a Tivo for quite a while now, and now that they have the EPG for all the channels they are hands down the best and easiest to use.

If you want sky channels, then the best bet is go and sign up to sky, It looks like igloo is a bit of a wanna be, it does do freeview, but not very well, it does do some sky channels, but again not very well.

But, the TIVO ISP partner is Telecom. That is not my ISP. Do you know whether I am able to "run" TIVO with any other ISP?

Yes you can, but of course it will count towards your data cap. i.e. updates and Caspa content

I'd love to see a Tivo update that adds Igloo support. Obviously that would take an agreement between Hybrid and Sky, as well as DVB-T2 hardware support if it's not already there, but it'd be brilliant to have a device that can access and record the additional channels.

Very unlikely to happen. They don't want people recording, etc.

Yes it can be used with any ISP. The only benefit using telecom , is they don't charge for bandwidth through the tivo, but you may not use much if you are only watching freeview channels on it.

OK - but the TIVO option does not give me the access, from time to time, to the Igloo "light Sky", movies and/or occasional (as selected and prepaid) sports events.

Also, wonder about my PC's v TV arrangement. PC's - connected to internet via modem/router and ethernet cables - are in downstairs (full basement) rumpus/office area. TV is upstairs and at other end of house. Could "run" a cable from router to the upstairs but it would be 8 or so metres long. That (cable length) may be a problem. But, can I have a wireless connection betweeen TV and PC/modem/router but leave PC's with ethernet connections?

As per original query/scenario - just wondered whether my thoughts about Igloo being just a supplement to a Freeview (with recording facility established) is a correct conclusion. Guess I could always get an Igloo tuner too (alongside Freeview setup - whatever that is) and have the "best of both worlds" in that way.

Who has other comments?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Tivo comes with a free wireless router to connect to your network. Not sure about igloo as it hasn't been released yet. I think you will need two boxes for the best of both worlds. Tivo lets you record freeview channels only, while the igloo doesn't appear to record, but can do live pause to a certain degree, and some pay as you go skytv options.
If you had unlimited funds, then getting mysky would perhaps be the best option.

Or Broadband and mobile with vodafone (you get it for free).

Not free, you still have to be paying for Sky, its only the MySky that's free. Which isn't nothing, but if you're already paying for Sky, you most likely don't need Igloo/SkyLite anyways.

Yes, sorry, I probably should have clarified that.

They were giving mysky boxes free anyway to existing sky basic subscribers. Although I believe they were the old mysky boxes, not the new one.

Yeah, I think they were the MySky not MySKY HDi boxes.

Great - thanks for all good replies.

As I concluded the Igloo system is supplementary to Freeview. Igloo have now confirmed to me that all Freeview (HD) transmissions are available on their system. And, they advise their tuner is not a recorder.

So, sticking with the free options, it looks like I (anyway) shall have a Freeview set up with a record facility of some sort and, maybe get an Igloo tuner so as I have the option of paying for the occasional sport event or "take up" the few Sky channels on a monthly prepay basis.

Thanks for all ideas and comments.

I didn't say that it was likely, just that I'd love to see it :)
