Ok people...do you want the bad news...or the really bad news?

According to many blogs I read, updates from online retailers is filtering through the N900 is going to be delayed yet again...

The bad news was, the new possible release date was looking to be around 13-20 November...

The really bad news, is that is now not looking to be the case...reports are coming out late January 2010 is more likely at best...with it possible it could be delayed further.

What I find most disappointing, is that Nokia themselves do not appear to have released any official update as to the progress status of this device...its all hersay and speculation based on online retailers, insiders and bloggers in the know.

I think I may be forced to buy a competing mobile.

Maybe I will get the Nokia 5800 to tide me over...thats cheap as chips

Make sure you are happy with Series 60 5th Edition as the availability of software is still not that great. I own a 5800 myself, and I probably wouldn't recommend it. However, as always it depends on your usage case.

I see others are re-thinking getting an N900 at release as the date slips further and further back...

The really disappointing thing for me also is that Nokia is silent on the issue. If they had made some press releases I might have waited it out, but now I think not.

Seems clear that there are hardware changes being made here from what some reliable sources like Maemo-Freak are saying, which is major and nearly unprecedented thing that close to the supposed release date of a handset. I think Nokia was caught majorly with their pants down with all the interest this generated, now they realise that this is going to a wider audience and therefore a more important stepping stone towards Maemo 6 than they had initially forecast. They thought this was just for hardcore geeks, who would be prepared to put up with all the shortcomings and workarounds needed at initial release, and not affect the OS brand perception going forward. Now they realise they seriously need to get it right, or risk alienating the potential audience for Maemo 6 devices.

I'll probably get the HTC HD2, since it should be hitting before the N900 (HTC have a good track record with on-time handset releases). For others thinking about changing or getting interim phones the SE Satio and Samsung i8910 (I currently own one of these) are both worthy of consideration...

Make sure you are happy with Series 60 5th Edition as the availability of software is still not that great. I own a 5800 myself, and I probably wouldn't recommend it. However, as always it depends on your usage case.

I used to own a Nokia N97, so I know Symbian v1 very well (S60 v5)

And that said I don't think there is anything wrong with software selection, ya just got a know where to look...although bearing in mind, I only use a few vital communication apps, I despise filling up a computer or mobile with apps I never use or are just for time wasting.

Yes, exactly, the is a big turn off for me too, immensely annoying.

I would not mind the wait, if only there were official press releases from Nokia updating the progress/status of the device...

Mmmmm...

To what I have read, the battery is insufficient, lasting only 7-10 hours medium usage, and there are overheating issues as well.

The biggest issues appear to be with the software...its far from complete.

NZtechfreak: I'll probably get the HTC HD2, since it should be hitting before the N900 (HTC have a good track record with on-time handset releases). I am now seriously looking at an interim mobile, possibly like to try Android, here is my likely shortlist:
- Samsung i8910
- HTC Hero
Cheaper alternatives:
- HTC Magic
- Nokia 5800

Will all depend on price...I don't want to spend much on what will likely only be a short term mobile, but it still must be able to do everything...HQ video recording, internet browsing with flash, multitasking, divx/avi codec, use an modem.

I went from the 5800 to the n97 in July and had to stop using Sportstracker because of the terrible GPS in the N97.

The app worked wonders all around Wellington on the 5800. I think you might enjoy it!

sad to see other users bashing on goffa in the trademe thread, even though he was absolutely right. people were defending jamie-b, just shocking! just shows if people will defend him there will be sure to be buyers of the "N900" once it is listed on trademe....

Now that's a bummer!!!! Im utterly disappointed with this news and at the same time narrowed my decision a bit towards buying the htc hd2! Im really fascinated with that phone. The only thing holding me back is the OS. Windows seems to be to serious for me. Android i think is the way forward fro mobile platform but in saying that i think maemo has a shot so i guess thats why nokia is holding back. Then again January 2010 is too far away.

I'm not really sure what you expect me to say?

The device has never been announced for anywhere outside of Europe and the US, so locally, we have no stance, nor press release to offer, in fact you probably have more knowledge of the device and when it should be shipping to you than I do.

I'm not really sure what you expect me to say?

The device has never been announced for anywhere outside of Europe and the US, so locally, we have no stance, nor press release to offer, in fact you probably have more knowledge of the device and when it should be shipping to you than I do.

I understand Nokia NZ currently have no stance, but the device would eventually make its way here...

Otherwise we would have just imported, which we would have possibly done to get it first/earlier/on release.

At the end of the day, its still a Nokia device, regardless of its intended market, so just thought I would bring your attention to our comments and current feelings...

Here you have me and NZtechftreak, two big Nokia fans, early adopters, and big spenders...and we are both thinking and saying the same thing...

Its not that we are tired of the wait (which we are), its more that we are frustrated with the lack of communication, there being no device status updates or official press releases...

Just figured you could convey that message, that sentiment to your work colleagues...if it made any difference.

Over here in the UK they're talking about November 20th now, with Nokia shipping early November.

I had already read that (hence my post 13-20 Nov), but have since found new info from reliable sources that that release date has also slipped...to late January.

I hope my sources are wrong.
