Does anyone use the nokia email messaging program alot?

I'm having problems with reply all.

If I reply to "Joe Blogs" email, say its " Joe Blogs" Joe.blogs@geekzone.co.nz, It will show up as Joe@geekzone.co.nz; Blogs@geekzone.co.nz; joe.blogs@geekzone.co.nz.

Does that make sense? lol

I got a few questions in my blog and receive replies from Nokia... I thought it would be interesting to post these here too:

timmyh, here are some answers from Nokia:

Q. What is the roadmap that Nokia outlined for Maemo, Moblin and MeeGo? Will both merge into MeeGo completely or will they remain separate?

A: Nokia and Intel are merging the Moblin and Maemo into one Linux-based platform for computing devices, MeeGo, for a wide range of devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Moving forward, applications written for Moblin or Maemo APIs will run on MeeGo.

The new software platform will consist of the best components of Maemo 6 and Moblin V2. We will select the best components out of hundreds of open source projects to create the most powerful software platform for mobile computers.

Q: And did they explain which devices will come out with Symbian vs. MeeGo/Maemo?

A: Nokia remains committed to the Symbian OS and its evolution under the Symbian Foundation for smartphones. We do believe that the continuing convergence of Internet and mobility brings an opportunity for a new class of devices, building on the Nokia N900 and as an evolution from products such as the Nokia Internet Tablets and that for such devices, a true open source Linux based operating system offers a compelling opportunity.

Q: It's great to see the N900 from Nokia and the positive reviews but the overall picture still feels a bit confused.

A: For consumers, MeeGo, running on high performance devices, will deliver a wealth of Internet, computing and communication experiences, with rich graphics, multitasking and multimedia capabilities and the best application performance.

MeeGo increases consumer choice. As it will run on multiple device types, people can keep their favourite apps whenever they change device or upgrade; they are not locked in to one kind of device or manufacturer.

For developers, MeeGo unites Maemo and Moblin and will significantly expand the market opportunities for developers. MeeGo will be deployed across many computing device types - including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment devices, and so will be a leading choice for application and services innovation.

OK so I have pretty much decided to buy one next month, time for a change from the E72.

What one piece of advice or other comment do each of you have for me? (I'll get around to reading this whole thread soon)

Well, for a start, read the first post of this thread...it has all the tips and links mentioned in this thread etc collated there.
Otherwise, check out Maemo.org.....that is basically all N900 owners now, heaps of good stuff there.

Ya will love the N900 Scotty mate, its a great mobile/mini PC...even MF loves it

My N900 has been invaluable over my holiday...
Maps/GPS, internet, email, IM messaging, photo and video recording, video out, and of course the phone and texting....I have used and needed it all.
And not a single issue.
My only concern as usual was the battefry...I have found using the maps/GPS to be a huge huge drain on the battery...so as a result I purchased an in-car charger, so that issue resolved now.
I am posting heaps of photos and video on my Facebook page and links via Twitter if anyone interested.
Just my thoughts...still a very happy N900 owner.

Huge update coming, PR1.2....SDK now available for those who wish a preview
These screenshots of included changes via MohammadAG over at NokiaUsers.net and Maemo.org

1. Virtual keyboard has been redone.

2. Menu is now rearrangable, and there is no more "More..."

3. Clear device is back in Settings.

4. The gap in the menus and status bar have been removed (top gap) - Edit: Might be SDK specific since the status bar isn't exactly the same as on the device.

5. Browser now has a back button, history view is accessible using the gesture.

6. Enable rotation is now an option in Settings (Browser).

7. Volume buttons can be set to change volume only in browser.

8. User Guide accessible in the browser from a main menu shortcut.

9. Media player has a play button icon instead of the moving bars (bottom right area)

10. Ovi Store link in "Change background" and "Themes" area.

11. Browser seems much much snappier, scrolling is quick and rendering is uber quick! Not sure if this is related to the much faster processor but the gecko engine was updated.

12. File manager has a share option for all files.

13. Video call option can now be enabled in contacts, SMSs to landlines can be disabled, voicemail number can be set.

The video call option looks interesting. The user guide mentions internet video calls as well. No mention of 3G video calls though.

MeeGo is now available for the N900...

Images of the 1st build of Meego have just been made available for download...
That in mind, it is still in very VERY early stages and is not polished like Maemo, nor is suitable for the average user...in it's current shape it is more for interested developers...

I may backup and flash my N900, just to see what it looks like, and report back my findings here....
Then and again, I may wait until others have done it and I will just post screenshots for ya.

Also;

New Twiter app: TweeGo
TweeGo is still in dev and missing many features, but it is by far the best loking and perfoming Twiter app for Maemo to date!
I recommend it to all to try and see for themselves.

Is now out of dev and available for purchase...works beautifully!
I used to Tether my HTPC to my N900 via the USB cable...but I found the connection was very slow for some reason...
Now I connect my HTPC to my N900's mobile broadband via wifi using JoikuSpot, and I have found the speeds are far FAR beter...getting tops speeds now!

A couple of questions for someone who is looking at N900;

I have been to both Parallel Imported and Digi Imports. They wont let you turn the phone on because nobody wants to buy a phone thats "used". I told the people in the shop I dont want to buy a phone that I cant try first!

Anyway.

Where are the maps at? Does it have maps yet? Are they as good as ovi? Whens voice nav coming?

Whats the screen rotation like? It always used to pis* me off with the N95 - it wouldn't pick up that you had rotated the phone, or was very laggy.

Any probs with random reboots when lots of apps open?

Hows that keyboard? Easy to type fast?

Ditto for the screen keyboard etc?

Can you run any linux based desktop app on it or do they have to be ported?

It has maps. It's basically version 1 of Ovi maps and is quite behind existing Symbian phone map versions. No idea about voice nav.

Whats the screen rotation like? It always used to pis* me off with the N95 - it wouldn't pick up that you had rotated the phone, or was very laggy.

The phone pretty much operates in landscape only. The only time portrait is used is when you use the phone dialer. The browser can be used in portrait but it requires a key combination. No annoying automatic rotation.

I've never had it reboot.

The keyboard is great once you get used to the different space bar location.

Never had to use it and dont miss it.

There's usually some porting involved otherwise they don't take advantage of the features of the platform. For example, XChat is pretty much the recompiled desktop version but it doesn't fit into the usage of the phone so well. You have to scroll using scrollbars instead of just dragging the screen, etc. It's not that big a deal though.

Big news....the community has successfully managed to over-clock the N900 all the way up to 1GHz!

It is easy to do...just flash your N900's with a modified kernel, the same way you would flash the OS, easy peasie.

I have the files...once I get home from work, I will flash my N900 to 900MHz...reports are that's stable yet blazingly fast, everything rendering instantly.

Anyone who wants to try this, BE WARNED, over-clocking does carry risks...and as the N900 community are only just experimenting with this now, we do not know the long term effects yet...which could include frying your device, shortening it's lifespan, crashing etc etc....

If you want to know more, or want the modified kernel files, PM me...otherwise have a read of this thread.

just buy one mate, you won't regret it and worse comes to worst and you do you can sell it and make a profit. (thats if u order from overseas obviously). i am still yet to meet someone who wasnt throughly impressed with their first hands on experience. also to answer one of your questions about screen rotation there is now an option in the settings menu to enable auto rotation. so far i've found this works for phone and picture gallery apps but im sure theres a few more apps that use it.
