one day vfone will work it out, and i'll lose my $2 balance :-)
hopefully by then i'll have a decent cdma phone - (bluetooth + colour + small) but i won't hold my breathe
if you want GPRS, you'll have to pay for it.. - it's jsut a fluke that i don't.
i've somehow not been charged since i bought my prepay sim nearly 18 months ago...
i've sent a few SMSes but never recieved any (it was playing with vcals), and i've never made a phone call - i only use the vfone as a modem for my PDA, since i can't do what i want on telecom.
i'm not using a standard setup when connecting to my phone - since i was blind guessing settings for my TT.
I can't find where to define APN - the palm OS GPRS setup consists of choosing a country and a telco and NZ just isn't listed. - i tried a few random telcos, and for about 9/10 of the options the result is "Wrong APN" message..
i have no idea what APN I'm using - but some of the country/telco options do work and i can send GPRS - but i've never been charged and i'm not gonna complain about that :-)
so i've got MSN +ICQ online, and i'm refreshing my IMAP folder every 5 mins - for over a year now.
they'd have to work out who i was..
the 2 features of prepay are, no contract (they don't know who you are)
and no risk of getting a really large unexpected bill, since you must pay before use.
it would dubious legality to send a bill to any prepay user, not to mention the PR problems it would cause.
besides which, i'm not actively avoiding paying. i tried the folks on 777, asking for help setting up the TT's APN - i was told they don't help with that unless you have a "business account". so i had to resort to trial and error.. and for some reason i'm not charged.
the one time i did ask for help again from 777, they sent something to reconfigure my phone and GPRS stopped working - so trial and error and it was working again...
so, if it aint broke, i'm not gonna fix it - Vodafone can go fix their billing instead.
The GGSN provides the point of attachment between the GPRS domain and external data networks, such as the Internet and corporate Intranets. Each external network is given a unique Access Point Name (APN) which is used by the mobile user to establish the connection to the required destination network.

For Vodafone NZ the default APN on GPRS phones is 'live.vodafone.com'

Not as such no. Putting an IP probably wouldn't work (never tried it). The APN setting may look like a valid URL, but is resolved internally on the GPRS network, rather than by Internet DNS. It should resolve to external interface of a gateway somewhere. That gateway interfaces from the operator's private GPRS network, to the public Internet (or some Intranet decided upon by the operator).
An APN provides routing information for SGSN and GGSN. The destination network must be connected to the GPRS network via a fixed line. The point at which this fixed line connects to the network is known as an APN. The APN generally consists of two parts (if I remember my GPRS course correctly): the Network ID, which identifies the external service requested by a user of the GPRS service and the Operator ID which specifies routing information.
