never mind the video conferencing - i just want mobile internet access with speed and convenience.
i want the speed at least 128kbps, and i want it in a decent phone. cdma offers faster speeds than gprs in this country, but their phones don't compare..
perhaps when wcdma rolls out, i'll have both worlds. in the immediate future i'd like a bluetooth cellphone to give inet access to my pda, but with a decent speed... or maybe telecom will beat them to it... for now i wait.

I think the problem with 3 is not the handoff between their own cells, but handoff to another band. For example if you're in the middle of a call and your coverage is gone it will not switch to another network on roaming. Instead it'll terminate the call and the user then will have to redial, this time using the roaming 2.5G network. Or so it seems to happen.

Vodafone don't appear to have any new gear installed on any sites in Wgtn yet. They did a lot of work earlier in the year swapping many 2 panel sites over to single panels so it'll be fairly obvious when the rollout starts.

Vodafone will probably follow their GSM route and be very expensive (speaking about UK market). Apparently they have had a significant amount of their 3g infrastructure working since early 2002, but have just been waiting for the right devices (= now) and to learn from the newbie 3. They seem to have done there homework - I see no long term sustainable advantage in being first with 3g.

That my 2 pence!!!!

Just spotted today after being in oz on holiday.. There are definetely some new panels appearing around Wgtn, saw one on the bolton st flyover site this morning so I'll have to have a look around town at some of the other key sites and have a look on the way home.

Thats interesting ! I hear that there are many Antennas installed in Auckland already .
Must check with the Spec Ann on the 3G Band next time in Wellington , see if any RF present.
