Thanks Timbo. please bear with me... and correct me if wrong :-)

GSM is a form of tdma, and thus Edge sits ontop of GSM and is also in the tdma family.
Vodafone NZ is skipping past Edge and instead focussing on getting their "3G" running. Is Vodafone's 3G = UMTS?

My circa 1999 cdma handset has a "Qualcomm 3G" label on it.. so what exactly is 3G?

i've seen it refererred to as anything that uses code division.. and also I've seen 3G defined as anything that offers certain download speeds.. the speed needed varies.

Is there an industry accepted definition of what makes a protocol = 3G?
