Sbiddle.."Voice is still the killer mobile app. Full stop" I agree, but not full stop. Both Telecom and voda are looking at rolling out these solutions for the business markets, the high value customers.
EVDO has been rolled out in a number of areas internationally and has nothing but praise. I for one thing this is a great decision for Telecom fighting the largest cell phone company in the world. its not often a NZ company gets the jump on such a large customers.
GSM certainley has higher penetration internationally, but from a NZ perspective Asia is where more and more NZers work and play. Asia is not a GSM strong hold, CDMA is the fastest growing network in Asia and when you consider the size of China im not quite convinced GSM will be the winner in the GSM Vs CDMA war
China is going to be interesting. GSM dominates there at present, the interesting thing is going to be what sacrifices Qualcomm are going to make in their dealings with Unicom to ensure that CDMA can grow to become the dominant standard in China, something they desperately need.
Yeah it will be intersting, I think Qualcom will be keen to make in-roads which will require some further concessions, but at the end of the day in an emerging market it may well come down to price unitl the market matures.
Does anyone have an insight into the strategies that will be employed?
Yepp its all happening on a mobile device near you. Dual sim cards to get round walled gardens, memory only limited by your wallet (to buy memory card) more processing power and better mobile entertainment. 3G rocks
yes mate - 2 contracts or 1 contract and 1 pay as you go or 2 pay as you go. You can do annoymous things with 1 or in my case (in the UK) get around operator 3 (or vodafone live's) resistricted acces to the mobile internet.
Dual sim is the way to go - also = 2 telephone numbers!
we really only have one telco here in New Zealand, - the second one (telstra) just resells the vodafone service.
very little point in having a second sim card.. but we don't have a walled garden wap service.
EVDO is better. based in the Telecom CDMA platform..
the whole network free's itself from constant rate circuit switched data. (voice calls)
GSM's version is very much an "add on" to an already patched up network.
(SMS, EFR codec, GPRS, EDGE)
UMTS has a not too bad 384Kbps download. pretty nice.
it also has a totally pathetic 64Kbps upload. Yawn.
for what I will prbably use it for Telecom's has the solution.
(Uploading pictures) has anyones sent a PXT. How SLOW it is Argh!!!!!!
but if the data prices are anything like their horredous current rates i'll stick to Woosh.
Was your problem solved? Did you manage to extend the ringing time? If yes, why complain if they're scripted or not. This is needed to make things efficient. Otherwise people would be talking around, and perhaps not even solving the problems.
And does it have to do with 3G, which is the topic on this thread?
I've had service ranging from terrible to excellent from both Vodafone and Telecom. Irrespective of which carrier you're with, it seems to depend entirely apon the staff member that you deal with on the day.
And there's nothing wrong with Simply Red if you're in the right mood. :)
Slightly off topic but now on topic! :-) Maybe somebody on here from Vodafone can tell me exactly what the cost is for a dialup data call to the Telecom Paging TAP Gateway (026 4001283) costs from a prepay phone on Motormouth?
I have rung 777 and spoken to several people, none of whom could tell me whether it's 49c or 1.29 and none were particularly helpful when I asked if somebody could get back to me with a definate answer. I have since emailed Vodafone (a dead loss at the best of times, last time I did get a response it was 5 months later) asking for the answer as well but have yet to hear back.
HA ha, you too I see.. They mention "other numbers may have different charges" and make utterly NO mention of what they might actually be, not on the brochures, not on the website! ARGH!
I got an email today half answering the question, it's a credit to the actual subcontracted company concerned. They could answer it better than the staff on 777 could
The 026 data numbers seem to be $1.39 as it's defined as "other calls"
the 087 data numbers are "data rates" so i'm assuming this is usual CSD data rates as per their website.
The problem is I don't want to change the plan from the 89c anytime to test it as if it does cost $1.29 I'll have to pay to switch the prepay back to the 89c plan again!
Hence a catch 22 position - I can see the only way I'll find out is to change but it's potentially going to cost me money so find out if I can save it!
