Telecom are launching CDMA EVDO which offers speeds up to 2.4Mbps download. The average will be 400-600kbps.

Forget about that wishy washy half baked 3G called UMTS being launched by Vodafone. Unless of course speed is not an issue to you......

UMTS up to 384kbps
or
EVDO up to 2.4Mbps

Hmmmmm.... I would rather drive a Ferrari than a Morris Minor. Plus why wait - EVDO will be launched before Christmas, UMTS is some time next year maybe?

I'd like to see them do it by Christmas! I really would.

Pretty unlikely though isn't it? Unless they roll out some half baked 'beta' network.

Sounds like a good propasition from Telecom but as usual it'll handsets and marketing that'll win over the customers.

Not at all - Christmas is very realistic. EVDO uses the same spectrum and cell sites/antennas as the current CDMA network. The HTC Falcon sold by Telecom is already ready for EVDO. Highly likely that the first devices will be EVDO PC Cards.

Yes I read some news stories after posting that last one.

Sounds good.

What are the CDMA EVDO devices like?

This all sounds pretty exciting, but I'll be keen to know what the data charges will be before I make any sort of committment to it. After all, there's no point in having the technology if you can't afford to use it (as is the case with current mobile data services)!

CDMA EVDO may be capable of 2.4Mbps, but the question is what speeds will telecom be implementing??

likewise vodafone GPRS is capable of over 100kbps, but it usually barely scrapes 14kbps around here (central wellington).
shoud i be expecting more from vodafone?

what speeds should i expect from telecom 3g data?

No biased gibberish just the facts....

taniwha,

EVDO is up to 2.4Mbps, there is no way to restrict the speed. Verizon in the US report averages of between 400-600kbps. So, expect these speeds when Telecom launch in NZ. Its not like GPRS which has slots, class x, etc.

EVDO... one speed for all the people and all the devices.

Jama what makes you think vodafone is playing catch up, and why do you always have to put down other compaies in every single comment and double up on threads

Sure its great knowing but why don't you go about it the right way

Vodafone is already testing 4G in Japan but do you hear other people putting down Telecom in every single post they write.

97% of people don't need speeds of 300k - 600k through there mobile phone to talk to people.

Voice is still the killer mobile app. Full stop. CDMA has given Telecom a superior data network for the past 2 years and has done nothing to stop the churn to Vodafone. Why should this be any different? If Telecom come out and match their fixed like broadband pricing then maybe they will clean up but I can't honestly see that happening while Theresa is running the place..

CDMA has always been superior to GSM/GPRS in terms of data and EV-DO is superior to WCDMA. The simple fact is however that GSM has become the default global standard for mobile networks and WCDMA has become the global standard for 3G networks. Nothing is going to change this. The EV-DO upgrade for Telecom was the logical option for them rather than having to build an entire WCDMA network from scratch with no GSM network to roam back on to, I find it whierd that so many people seemed surprised by todays announcement.

Ditto to you. I have seen you and others on multiple occasions post negative or snide comments about Telecom. I apologise to you if I seem defensive but just maybe I feel a need to try and add what I see is some balance to the discussion. You seem to overlook that Telecom is a small Telco by world standards up against a global monolith that has 200M mobile customers. It seems to be a standard kiwi response to knock the 'tall poppies' when we should be celebrating the fact that a kiwi company is bringing world leading technology to the masses.

Also, please excuse me if I seem a little excited about EVDO, but as a geek myself and being that this is Geekzone I would have thought that this is a significant announcement. I also recall the huge amount of buzz created on Geekzone when Voda announced UMTS. Why should Telecom's announcement not be treated with same level of enthusiasm?

You are correct that NTT-DoCoMo have trialled 4G in Japan. I would be very happy to have 20Mbps over mobile.

sbiddle .. :-)
telecom may have had the superior data network - but they're not had the handsets or other connected devices to use it - which seems to me to be one of the biggest reasons fort he "churn to vodafone"

myself, i'm with telecom because their covereage is better where i live, but more importatntly, i was offended by the consistentenly bad and rude service from vodafone (i'm meaning the people on 777, and the hoops i had to jump though to stay connected).

I wish, i wish, i wish that telecom ran a gsm network - it might not work as well as CDMA on the ohms and hertz level, but the devices built on GSM technology have much more variety, are better built and offer more functionality.

I'd like to just put in my 2 cents worth.

I feel from my experience that Telecom vs Vodafone and telecom vs the other data services - ie telstra clear etc has actually given telecom the wake up that it needs - the problem with a perceived monolopy is that you become lak in your thinking and service - with the competition coming into the market - Telecom is almost not to put a pun on it - but they are the sleeping giant and now it is becoming to stir - I have seen a huge increase in the service and delivery of the telecom corporate machine - I for one totally support the move by telecom to become aggressive in the market place.

Cheers

sleeping giant... Mind you you Vodafone is a giant which Telecom is working against. It's the small country mobile operator against an almost 200 million customers worlwide giant. Economy of scale for Vodafone is something that Telecom New Zealand can not think of. When Telecom buys 20,000 mobile phones, Vodafone buys 20 million. This brings a tremendous bargain power to Vodafone. It's good that Telecom is working with Sprint and being part of some of the deals when buying handsets and some technology.
