No need for them to subsidise it - they could simply sell it at the same cost as a variety of other retailers already do, surely? At present, they get none of the sales in that segment whereas for little effort they could get some - possibly even most - of them.

Good info there; thanks. I suppose the only reason to look for VoLTE etc is future proofing?

Saw a version of the OnePlus 6 in red on line (not in NZ) and that just looks fab.

Re: subsidies - the telcos are not truly in the business of selling phones over ~$299 outright. They sell a lot of very cheap phones, they sell a lot of expensive phones on finance (be it contracts or interest free), and they sell very little in-between, as well as very few outright flagships - customers that buy outright overwhelmingly buy through big box retailers. To the telcos, the risk of selling a dual SIM device - which is fundamentally designed to use multiple networks at once - is actively encouraging their subscribers to shop elsewhere, be it for prepay, postpay, roaming, or et cetera.

They do indeed cut themselves out of the market for dual SIM, but that market consists primarily of:

1. Customers who want to use two networks at once to get the best deal on Prepay

2. Travellers who don't want to pay hefty roaming charges

3. Business users who want to carry one phone with both a personal and work number on it

4. Enterprise customers / first responders who need dual network coverage for business continuity

The telcos don't care enough about those customer segments, which are by nature a very small percentage of the NZ market - and those customers are generally serviced by the big box retailers instead. The question I offer is if you don't want to take a dual SIM device on telco finance, why would you want to buy one from a telco - at full RRP no less - in the first place?

There is also the issue of costly certification and MOQs, the telcos can't just say 'Hey Samsung give me twenty dual SIM S9s for this one customer thanks'. All that said, 2degrees is the lone telco that's open to dual SIM, in part for range differentiation vs. Voda and Spark. Look for the dual SIM Moto G6 range to hit 2d shortly.

Re: VoLTE - this needs very specific, painfully specific, per-telco software implementation and testing to work. By the time NZ telcos roll VoLTE in who-knows-how-many years, the few existing 4G/4G devices on the market will be old news, and I highly doubt Huawei would invest the significant time and money required to get them certified for it - not least because the dual SIM P20s aren't officially available in NZ. So again, zero advantage in seeking 4G/4G over 4G/3G for NZ customers.

Re: the red OnePlus 6 - it does look rather nice. I am quite the fan of red phones when they are the right shade of red. Unfortunately the NZ market as a whole is not at this point, so I doubt we'll see it widely available here. Blue is the hot colour of the moment, which is quite curious as it has historically not been at all. As phones converge to generic rounded black rectangles, it's nice to see colour variety make a return.

Have a look here, there are lots of dual sim phones.

I am thinking of getting one that is water resistant to take kayaking.

It's bloody hard to find out what a phone supports on the second Sim.

My recent searching led me to believe that stacks of phones including most Samsung phones only do 2G on the second Sim.

I chose a moto G5s, and I like it a lot. I'd go for the newer range due to it supporting dual Sim + SD.

2G on the second Sim is a poor choice at this point.

Both myself and my colleagues have purchased from Supero multiple times without any issues - their warranty is quite good too. It drop ships normally from overseas but quickly and all GST is covered on their end: http://supero.co.nz/oneplus-6-128gb-8gb-silk-white/

In the end this ends up being less than $100 in savings over getting the 128 GB version from NLs. At this point my plan is to get one from NLs unless that differential increases and then I'm happy to buy from a drop shipper as long as it has a decent rep (so good to know you're ok with Supero).

It does look like, however, that Supero includes the dash charger (I assume with an NZ adapter?) so at least there's not the additional cost of buying the dash/VOOC changer (though one post here seems to suggest someone got it thrown in free from NL?)

NL never (as far as I'm aware) dropped the price on the 5T, and they've indicated it'll be the same with the 6, so there's no point holding out for sales (I'm assuming this is because they've imported it themselves, so they take any hit rather than being able to squeeze the distributor.)

fun fact.. one of the nokias spark did, the first batch was dual sim.

This wasn't intended, but a bonus for those customers who got in fast...

i love my v20, its dual sim.. I'd prefer if it had a little more ram and wasn't only 2CA..

What it allows me to do, is simply use the better network for data while keep my other sim that i hold onto for voice at home (where signal isn't so flash).

When i'm out traveling, it's really handy to be able to just flip providers for data.

I do carry hotspots and sims on my at all times, but that's a hassle to pull out compared to a quick swipe.

The OnePlus 6 looks good; I see Noel Leeming sell it but without the Dash charger for some reason.

Heard it's because there is no NZ version of the Dash charger

My vote would be the Nokia 7 Plus, but in a few months time you will have a whole new selection of phones to choose from.

True, but as discussed on the OnePlus 6 thread, NL does sell the VOOC charger for $40 ($21 with the discount many people can get through work deals etc) - this is Oppo branded but uses the same tech (OnePlus and Oppo are owned by the same company). Given it clearly costs NL < $20 for the VOOC charger, it's a shame they just don't throw it in with the phone.

I have a dual SIM Galaxy S7. I did some experimenting last night. With the latest S7 CSC update from 2degrees, Wi-Fi calling is possible. So I've flashed the NZC CSC onto my dual SIM (parallel import) phone. A reboot enabled the menu item in settings, and so have managed to get the WiFi calling symbol in the status bar, but interestingly, only when 2degrees is enabled as data provider. The S7 is capable of 4G/3G dual standby

If anyone is interested, PB Tech sent me an email about a sale on Monday in which the OnePlus 6 6Gb RAM/64Gb storage version has $99 off.

I don't really know enough about the hardware to know whether 6Gb/64Gb is enough when compared to the 8/128 version.

A classic PB Tech sale - a discount that brings this phone down to exactly the same as the standard price at NLs.

I'm hoping the red one turns up in NZ! It looks fab.

Or a dual sim 4G re-release of the Nokia 7110.

FWIW turns out the OP6 has been updated with dual 4G/4G capabilities. Still of no particular benefit to NZ, but hey, it's there for those that want it. Handy for testing 4G signal from two different networks simultaneously if nothing else!

There is a pretty fair reason involved here. Without going into detail, I would not recommend trying to get a OnePlus product purchased from there repaired under warranty. PB made a specific decision to handle OnePlus warranty in-house, which regrettably does come at a higher cost. Well worth it IMO.
