Made some progress with Vodafone who will blacklist the phone if I provide a copy of the police report (which I have) and a receipt showing the IMEI number (My receipt from Noel Lemming doesn't have that unfortunately).

Off to NL to try and get a different receipt. Not expecting much there...

Why is this so hard?

Do you happen to have kept the original box for the phone? (Or am I the only sad-sack that keeps boxes?!) That'll have the IMEI on it, and may be proof enough.

Yeah, I normally keep boxes for a while and do a regular "cull" and unfortunately, that box has been culled already...

So then tell the insurance company to contact one of the carriers and get it blacklisted

I can't really imagine them doing that... Doesn't really seem to be their problem to solve...

They own the phone once insurance is paid out so is kind of there problem

Given they said "we don't pay out the phone until you can prove you've blacklisted it", I can't see why they would go out of their way to make it happen...

What kind of phone are we talking about?

If it's an iPhone you might be able to retrieve the serial number from Noel Leeming, and then I guess maybe contact Apple with proof of the Police report and see if they can match that up with an IMEI?

It's an Android Phone (Moto G5).

I've put out a call to NL to see if I can match the IMEI with my purchase. Fingers crossed.

Can I ask who your insurance company is just so I can make sure to avoid ever dealing with them next time I review my insurance? Because that's totally a them problem.

Ta.. They are already pretty damn low on my list but I'll nudge them a bit lower still :-)

Don't you need to pay the excess fee for this claim? You see, the time you spent on this plus the excess fee. Do you think still worth to claim?

Personally, I think State Insurance just makes it harder for people to claim.

I think most insurance providers do the same thing, requiring it to be blacklisted that is.

I'm not sure about the other carriers or if this changed, but at 2degrees we weren't allowed to blacklist a phone if it hadn't been used on our network within the last 30 days or 3 months, I can't remember which. The policy was we had to be able to see the IMEI on the connection in Siebel, and it simply wouldn't show it to us on the front line if it was outside that time frame or if it wasn't used on that connection. The backend teams had ways of finding it ofcourse but it never got to that point for the ones i dealt with.

I agree with the policy, but I also think there should be an alternative to blocking an IMEI without getting a carrier involved, such as submitting proof of purchase + police report to TCF who would then add it to the blacklist themselves.

OK, I'm still stuck on this.

I spent 1h at 2degrees on Saturday trying to get them to blacklist my phone. People there were nice enough but did not really help.

My next move is to try and convince the insurance company to still cover the phone but that is basically giving them the choice between sending me money and not sending me money... I can imagine which one they'll pick...

Is there no one here from Vodafone / Spark or 2 Degrees who would be willing/able to help me there?

Thanks

Between the damage and other stuff stolen, it's still worth paying the excess. But as you can imagine, every little bit helps so I think it is important that the insurance company covers that phone as well.

You are right, this was my experience when going to 2Degrees over the weekend. They couldn't see the handset show up on their system. (it was last used on their Network in November/October). Interested to find out how I can get to these Backend Teanms and whether they could help?
