Hmmmm I feel that there is something wrong out there in cyber la-la land. Someone suggested that the telcos will phase out 3G in favour of 4G. They should maybe get their act together now! And, can anyone point me to a source of reliable data from consumer surveys that show the relative preferences for people for person-to-person voice as compared to those who (like, it seems, some on this site) would suggest that this is so obsolete! Is the concept behind the PSTN- connect seamlessly to anyone when you know their number- so dated it should be abandoned? (Yes, I know, circuit switched although I bet not behind the scenes!)

I dont like the PSTN because it has no sense of a contact list that is allowed to get intouch, and the hardware makers seem to fight against apps that allow that to be done in software. Anyone with my number can bombard it with calls, disrupting data sessions (because no VoLTE for me) and the same with SMS.

No authentication that the number presented is actually who it is, so you get daily spam calls in chinese with some embasy number as the caller, randoms from some 3rd world sweatshop presenting a sydney number trying to sell me something, and all sorts of other crap coming in over it.

Whereas facebook messenger, I add you as a friend, you can call me. I block you, you cant. Simple stuff that is too much for a telco. People cant spoof it with a trivial entry on a sketchy voip provider.

This topic seems to have become quiet. However, I am left with the impression that voice calls are sooo old fashioned! (The great thing imho about the PSTN is that it is open...you receive something called a 'telephone book' ! Gasp- with your number exposed in it!) The other impression I get is that VoLTE is clumsy and has serious troubles- so much so I note that people have switched from 4G to 3G as a default. Now, when 5G becomes affordable and common, how will voice calls be carried? If any, of course.

If anyone calls me I immediately ask to send me an email. I want a record of the request/conversation. And call quality sometimes is terrible...

You mean my comment on voice calls? I just meant that voice calls are certainly not my preferred means of contact.

I am astounded that anyone would not want a personal one-to-one voice contact! with another person! Avoid span etc. but there are better ways of doing this than hiding. I am it seems out of date- I'm told that children use their 'devices' to communicate with another a few metres away. Probably TXT- I am a little concerned that everyone seems to walk about with their faces buried in their 'devices', not looking about at their environments and it a worry to me that this is happening.

Phone calls are a pain and many people would prefer to be emailed in a commercial setting.

  • You can finish what you're doing before switching tasks, rather than being distracted. Handling a bunch of the same type of task together can also be more efficient.
  • You can look up the information you need, check availability etc. rather than waste the other person's time in the middle of the conversation.
  • It leaves a record rather than just memories.
  • No phone tag, waiting in a queue, or being put on hold.
  • Less trouble with accents & poor english.

On the flip side, asking for clarifications and fixing misunderstandings is easier on the phone.

daringpeter: [snip]Probably TXT- .

Not so much any more. Pre smart phones it would reign supreme, but now increasing use of various instant message apps instead which don't have the limits of SMS messaging.

Not mine either since with emails or messages I can literally quote them.

With voice calls I'm just down to paraphrasing which risks the chance of missing a detail or two.

Quite honestly VoLTE is a saving grace for some but because NZ's phone market is so stagnant between Samsung, Huawei, Apple and Oppo. It's no wonder other brands like Nokia, Motorola, Google, Oneplus etc etc get literally 0 support because there's no market share here(my own theory and opinion so take with grain of salt I didn't do any research before making this post).

If you can get VoLTE running on a non supported phone. Great. You're on your own though.

Simple. I have worked with telcos since the mid-90s. I was involved in designing, developing and marketing voice-based platforms. At some point I was sure voice-calls were the "killer app". But I don't think this anymore. One-to-one voice contact is good but interrupts MY time. I am more than happy to have a phone conversation on a business setting if it's pre-arranged. My time is precious and I don't want to give it away to other people because of their interests. So if this is a business thing, please send me an email or text message (and by the way the core of my communications is over Instant Messaging, not SMS.

All this stuff should just work. It should be up to the standards makers to make a standard that the telcos have to follow to have it work, not mess around with client devices to have them compatible with various broken in different way implimentations that different telcos produce.

Agreed. my phone supports both volte and wifi calling, but, will never be supported in NZ as it was not sold by one of the NZ networks. Having proper standards and adhering to them should be enough to enable this functionality. Don't think that is ever going to happen though.
