alisam:

Thank you, I appreciate the information on the Oppo.

No worries, the link to the review went missing and I can't edit my post anymore so here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1BfSQkWpxg

If you're a fan of aftermarket software or keeping your phone current for a long, long time after the manufacturer drops support, Motorola and OnePlus seem to be the best candidates. Modern Samsungs are a lot more locked down than they used to be.

PB has a Moto G 5G Plus for $499 today.

Parallel Imported OnePlus Nord N10 5G for $439.

I have a Xiaomi and the hardware is great but the stock software is terrible if you're not a fan of EULAs. They're unlockable but it's a pain.

This Nokia could also be a good candidate if you’re worried about Chinese owned companies.

Have you considered the Pixel 4a 5G.

It's just over your budget at $849.
You can buy from dick smith or if you want a NZ sourced one, I recently got mighty ape to price match dick smith for the Pixel 4a so they may be willing to do the same for the 4a 5G.

The 4a 5G has got the larger screen like the Pixel XL models in the past, a very good camera, and always has the latest Google updates. It also has a new fast snapdragon CPU if you care about that.

And of course being a 5G model it has 5G :)

When is the next generation Pixel due? The Pixel does well with photography but mostly because of its software rather than it's older hardware.

The Samsung A52 5G is out (Galaxy A52 5G Awesome Blue 128 GB | Samsung NZ) and mentions 6GB RAM (and I cannot see an 8GB RAM).

However, JB-Hi had the phone with 8GB RAM. I questioned it, via their 'Contact Us' site. Heard nothing, but the web site now says 6GB, so at least they have corrected their web page. I see parallel import sites have an 8GB.

I have narrowed my list to the A52 5G ($699) or the Oppo A74 5G ($559 PB Tech - Buy the OPPO A74 (2021) 5G Dual SIM Smartphone 6GB+128GB - Fluid Black - Bonus... ( CPH2197-BK ) online - PBTech.co.nz. I don't really need the bonus headphones).

Bearing in mind I 'should' be able to get $100 trade in on my Note 5 making the A52 $599, am I better off with the Samsung A52 for a long term phone.

To round off this topic.

I purchased a Samsung A52 5G with the Samsung S View case from P B Tech as both items were included in their recent birthday sale.

I have claimed the $100 trade in for the phone, but I had to pay I think $7.70 for the courier.

alisam:

Not Huawei (my wife has a budget Huawei and there is nothing wrong with it, but Trump made me nervous).

Personally, I'd rule out all Chinese-owned handsets.

At least unless you replace the software
