Loosely related but a number of rest homes have recently been fitted out with RCG's iConn in-building coverage solution for all of the reasons listed above (dense walls, RF blocked, etc.). Basically it works exactly the same as RCG's typical rural coverage works (i.e. you have full bars on all 3 main carriers) with the only real difference being it's designed to go in buildings (like rest homes) as opposed to just in remote rural locations. Could be worth suggesting the facility look into getting it installed if it's an issue for many residents. I have no idea of the cost.

I can't speak for the home and I have no direct contact with them, but I know from the daughter that they do take calls for residents on their main number and are prepared to take a phone to the resident. I think this, along with the availability of smart phones for every individual, regardless of their ability to make use of them, is seen as a sufficient solution. Anyone who wants a private phone in their room just needs to get a smart phone. The fact that some residents are not capable of using them is a separate matter. Again, I don't know for a fact that this is the home's attitude but I suspect it may be. Their job is to care for the residents, not solve outside communications problems. Phones are available, just not in the precise manner this particular lady requires. She just has bad luck that her phone doesn't work quite as it should. It also doesn't help that she is so rigid in her demands, but that is just the way it is. Some people get like this in their old age.

Your last lines are the problem. All of this devolves on the daughter, who just wants to push a button and have things work. I am not able or willing to get directly involved. I am just trying to provide advice as best I can.

What people want, and what they can have are entirely different things. If they refuse to be flexible there is no solution that will work.

The old lady had a stroke, suffers from old age, and is incapable of being flexible. It is not refusal, it is her mental state. Go easy on her.

I understand entirely, but sometimes the answer has to be, sorry there is no solution that fits what you want

"that must be hard for you, I hope you are able to find a solution" is all you have to say. Not your problem to solve and the daughter is probably at the age where they are a problem user too.

Agree.

When assisting in these sorts of situations, folk need to be aware that the person in residential care is often where they are, against their will, and oftentimes are none too happy about it.

It can very difficult to deal with these sorts of situations, and responses that may work elsewhere, do not always work in these scenarios.

I know, I've been there, and it is b....y hard to deal with.

I may not understand the issue correctly, but if the Wifi in the home is OK, then is a big button Wifi VOIP phone what's needed here?

e.g. X305 Big Button IP Phone

My father in law has just been given a TCL Onetouch 4042S.  It has a charging base it can sit in, like a cordless phone.  He's only taken a few days to get used to it - once you unlock it, you can start dialling a number and ignore the menus.

I have a neighbour with limited vision who has no end of trouble with the big button cellphone she got as a backup for her landline, too hard to handle and with various extraneous buttons inadvertently pressed and the form factor not a natural fit to the face. Any level of menu or multiple behaviours per key is too much for this market. Keeping it charged is problematic as low vision and poor dexterity makes even the cradle hard to interact with.
