i wouldn't expect it to be anything over $50 though.
but best you get them to confirm it.

Deffenetly, I'll drop it off if its a reasonable price on friday because my old SE has s&*t itself again and is going in for repair to vodafone, the 4th time! :@. this is that big nokia building i see on the corner near vodafone on broadway? like about 20 or so shops down there is a side street and we go down there to get to vodafone.

Don't do that. Just buy a micro USB cable off Trademe. Maybe your Dad's phne even uses the same cable? I don't think there's anything special about it. A "genuine" one will cost about $20, a 3rd party one can be had for under $10.

I emailed Nokia's Auckland repair center in New Market, they replyed today saying it would cost $45 for a technition to assess the phone physically. Then a quote will be generated. If I accept the quote, then that $45 will be deducted from the repair fee. They also said if a firmware upgrade is needed, they usually run for about $70. So $25 to get a firmware upgrade from nokia itself. Not too bad because atleast its fixable if they break it, but if I do it, I'm left with a brick. :(

and @bazzer: Dads phone doesnt come with a USB cable, but it does use the same micro USB cable as mine. I'll wait untill the new one arives that I've paid for, along with my memory card :@. but I have some spare change and notes I could use and get nokia to do it for me, atleast they know what they are doing. the closest i've had to doing this was with my iPod touch. but they are impossible to brick. :D

thanks guys anyway, main concern was just about wheather my phone would be locked or not.

Seriously? You'd rather pay Nokia $70 for something you could do yourself for $10? Nokia's Software Updater is fully supported, and probably just as hard to brick as your iPod. As long as you've got a full charge, you shouldn't have a problem. Note also, that Nokia won't backup your data either so you may as well try restore factory settings first.

Worse case you make a mistake, it gets bricked then pay Nokia the $70.

I didnt realise how bad this software is. My camera is currently stuck in Standby Mode constantly and is unusable. I tried to do a full restore on the phone using the factory reset but it managed to fail (:S). So cant wait to ge that USB cable. Emailed the seller today

Cool dude. It will save you $ by doing it your own. If you get stuffed while upgrading, it's easy for repair centre's to revive your phone for the same price as Nokia quoted you for. Plus you can use the cable for future syncing with your PC.
