I got a nokia 6500 slide today and it is unlocked and has been used in UK, france, australia and on vodafone and telecom xt in nz. The software version is S40 V3.80 and i think the current version is S40 V5.0. My phone is really buggy and i want to update, but will the phone still be unlocked once i update the phone? thanks

I might have changed the product code or whatever it is called to something different to get the latest version and better langauages. I'm assuming yours is parallel imported? It could have anything on it. Just wait to get the USB cable and see what comes up. You could probably get it done at a Nokia service centre but they might charge.

Try doing a full restore,

that worked for me.

Does it work if you just press the power button once? does it bring up the menu of profiles?

I can switch between profiles fine, but as soon as i want to edit (personalise) the profile, the phone freezes and i have to return to standby screen. And the USB cable is in storage as the seller just moved from Australia and is sending the rest over in the coming weeks so i cant restore. I have however tried an update over air through gprs. When i try to download the latest software from nokia, it says "remote server failed to respond" so i cant download the updated files.

OTA will take forever, and will more than likely chew up a crap load of data.

the last update i did on my S60 phone was 115MB.

If you dont mind losing everything on your phone, you can do a reset by typingi n a code on the keypad? and it will reset everything to the default configurations etc.

I'll just wait till I get the cable, then i can back up and save my files and update to the latest version.

I also looked at my dads phone today, he got a new one from work because his old telecom broke, and its a nokia 2103c? i think. and i saw in the settings he was running version  9.something and was way ahead of my version. Would telecom update it for me if i asked them to?

Rather than trying to update the firmware over the air, I would use the Nokia Software Updater that you can download to your PC. That way you can upgrade the phone's firmware from the comfort of your home. It also won't cost you anything. Just make sure you follow the instructions of backing up the phone etc.

But thats the problem, i dont have the USB cable just yet, its still in storage awaiting shipping. I doubt nokia lets you update the firmware via bluetooth either so waiting for the cable or going to telecom/vodafone and getting them to update it for me is the only option. :(

You can only update the 6500s using a CA101 data cable and Nokia Software Updater.

The reset method that AaronA mentioned will not work as you have a Series 40 handset and not a Series 60

If you live in Auckland you can take the handset to the Nokia Care Centre on Khyber Pass Road, but be aware that there will be a charge involved if the handset is parallel imported.

Other than those options you will have to wait until the cable arrives or buy/borrow one.

If you're gonna call, you might as well ask them while you're on the phone ;)

i wouldn't expect it to be anything over $50 though.
but best you get them to confirm it.
