From memory, it's referred to as UMTS on the box.

you need to check if it is the W995 or the W995a

the 995a has 850Mhz 3G - which means it should work on AT&Ts 3G network

the 995 does not have 850Mhz capability, and will only work on 2G on AT&T - which means you might not have coverage where you are (I assume AT&T do have a 2G network?)

AT&T most definitely has a 2G network; my phone kept falling back to it all the time when I was over there!

So AT&T claiming they have 3G is just a gimmick?? ..and the W995 on the ericsson site saying it had 850mhz capability is also false..? Whats the difference between the plain and the "a" at the end? i clearly have the plain or else i would have stated that earlier.

Most networks offer a mix of 2G and 3G. Very few networks in the world offer pure 3G (Telecom New Zealand and Telstra Australia are one of the very few 100% 3G networks in the world).

The 3G service may not be available in every location AT&T serves. Also the coverage of 2G and 3G varies because of network load, cell site location (they use different sites) and so on.

But it could be no AT&T problem at all. The handset may not be 3G 850 MHz compatible, which means only works on 2G when an AT&T SIM card is inserted.

One last question: what network was this handset locked to before? Or the eBay seller was just importing its own stock?

I think it may be time to take the handset to a store, with the box, and see if someone can help there. They may look at the specs to make sure it's compatible with the bands AT&T uses.

Is that what AT&T said or Sony?

Did they put a new SIM in there for you to make sure or are they just saying that to get you out? lol

the sony site probably just lists both variants as one device - it's quite common to do that.

I already explained the difference between the 995a and the 'plain' 995.
the 995a is 3G 850MHz compatible,  the 'plain' 995 is not.

This means that, for AT&T, it will not work on their 3G network.  It will work on their 2G network.
Since you have the 995 and not the 995a, you will never ever get 3G AT&T coverage on that phone.
 You will get 2G coverage.

I think AT&T also has some 1900 MHz in metro areas (but don't quote me on that).
