Hi, i'm not really sure if i even posted this message in the right place.. but i just got this sony ericsson w995 2 days ago and it cant see to find a network connection. For maybe a split second or two the phone can find my AT&T service, but it generally goes out very quickly. I bought this phone unlocked from ebay..

I have tried taking the sim and battery out then tossing them back in but no use. I had gone to the settings/connectivity/mobile networks/search.. and it could not find a network. I also made sure the phone was up to date and tried to install the software but the SE told me it was already done.

I'm not really sure what to do.. I contacted the sony ericsson technical issues department and they just told me that they would have to have me ship the item to them so they can try to fix it. I just wanted to know if you guys had some alternative ideas for this problem.. I really dont want to send my phone to them and have them tell me they can fix it for $100+ :/

Thank you for your time :)

P.S. I live in California, United States, if that makes any difference..

sounds like you bought a broken phone.

this might sound like a stupid question, but you do have a SIM card in the phone don't you?

sorry,I meant to say
"a sim... that works on a network compatible with the model of the phone you bought."

I think we may be missing a bit of information here... Let me go through some things.

You insert your SIM card and power the phone. Are you able to place a phone call at all?

At what moment "No network connection"appears, and where you see it (in an application, browser, or just the main page on the phone)?

I am asking because "No network connection" sounds like a mobile data problem, not a mobile network problem.

If you can place voice calls, then the phone is registered with the network, and the "No network connection" message is related to mobile data. If this is the case I am inclined to say you haven't entered the APN settings for your mobile operator.

Please confirm...

I have been in several different areas and at the top left corner there is a red flat line and in the middle of the phone at the top where the carrier name should be it says "no netw. connection". However, very rarely at random times the phone recognized my AT&T provider but there are still no reception bars. The last time that happened i quickly tested it by using another phone to call the SE and the call had gone through.

Ok, so the voice calls go through - this is good. I suspect coverage/reception should be pretty bad in this area though, and that's causing the problem...

What's the model of your w995? Does it say on the box what 3G band it is compatible with?

AT&T uses 850 MHz 3G, and if the handset is not fully compatible it might be dropping down to 2G - and if the 2G coverage is not great around there.

This could explain why one handset get great coverage and the other doesn't...

I was just going to say, its probably the 3G bands. Because he said its unlocked, it might be an import from NZ or UK? (UK's phones are unlocked too right?) and they use the 900/2100 3G bands too. So no 3G means the phone would use 2G which might not be available/strong enough to connect to in his area.

Most of the handsets in the UK are SIM locked

The paper thing it came with says:

W995 Aluminum Haze ZS
GSM 850/900/1900/2100

and i made sure that these numbers corresponded with the 580..

The problem is that GSM is 2G, not 3G. AT&T uses WCDMA 850 (3G).

Does it say anything about WCDMA on the box?
