johr; so will Vodafone announce this, or will we just see more Nokia 6600 and other phones supported with Live? What does WAP2.0 affect, does it remove the IP gateway at 172.030.038.003?
They will never have full live access unless they are branded as vodafone live phones with the vodafone logo on the actual phone itself.
However, what happens is the main wap homepage you get when you access WAP will be a slightly limited version of Live eg: you will not be able to download games or ringtones from Live.
Vodafone has no obligation to actually announce the launch of Wap2.0 because they do not sell any phones which are not compatible here in NZ. The Wap 2.0 is simply a step into the future for compatibility with more phones and services.
Best thing is to get the settings from www.vodafone.co.nz ... mobiles and accessories ... using your mobile ... wap phone setup guides. Then towards the middle of feb try using wap again then.
The real deal is about WAP Gateway vers 2 not about Vodafone Live as that’s just Vodafones name for their WAP portal site. Vodafone Live which is just WAP pages sitting on a server and these are served up to the internet and accessed through a WAP Gateway vers 1.5 (or whatever version it is) (WAP Gateway is software sitting on a server) Your phones web browser (like IE / Netscape) reads this and you view this information.
WAP 2.0, the newer implementation of the Wireless Application Protocol, which replaced WML (the Wireless Markup Language) in flavour of XHTML. As you may know, W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) has recently recommended that XHTML be used as the mark-up language for web pages.
So new phones like the Nokia 6600 can with their Opera web browse view WAP sites coded in XHTML. Means better, smarter content, more secure, a better standard and also more interactive.
The problem is with newer phones like the Nokia with the Opera browser are not supported on WAP gateways prior to Vers 2.
Vodafone Lives will dish up pages customised for different phones and these pages may be ringtones, games or just content. No one will know what say a Nokia 6600 will see on Vodafone Live till Vodafone upgrade the Gateway and offer content.
At the end of the day once the Gateway upgrade happens you will be able to access any other WAP sites through a bookmark.
Hope this clears this up that’s its about the WAP Gateway not Vodafone Live.
Mobile browsing technology is evolving from WAP 1.x to WAP 2.0, introducing a new markup language for mobile content development, XHTML Mobile Profile (XHTML MP) with WAP Cascading Style Sheets (WAP CSS). This provides content developers with graphical presentation capabilities and full control of the layout of their mobile services, thus enabling easy service optimization for different user interfaces.
The primary use of browsing is content discovery and download via mobile services, which offer a rich user experience and attract users to browse for content. Browsing can also be seen as a key enabler for various kinds of other services, such as games, online infotainment, and business services.
Nokia´s WAP 2.0-compliant browser supports XHTML MP with WAP CSS and, for backward- compatibility, also WML 1.x. On these pages you will find information about mobile application development for Nokia devices with either XHTML MP or WML 1.x. Technical support alternatives and the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit and other tools for content developers are also available here.

I am upgrading from my nokia 7250 to the 6600 tomorrow knowing that it don't pxt or wap surf yet, but i'm hoping they can sort them selves out at vodafone soon!!!.
Hmmm at least we can local pxt thru blue tooth in the mean time lol!!!....sad.
If they don't do anything soon, they can't sell any new model phones that use the wap2.0 anyway so i'm sure it would be in there best interests to get on with that Shizzle!!.
Hello Peter piper, Mikey states in his comment he hopes that vodafone sorts there stuff out soon, if had read the thread there would be no need to say that as he would know the WAP 2.0 platform goes live first weekend in Feb 2004
Yeah yeah...the word is feb but what's the bet it's just a rumour and it wont go for good long 3 months or so. As for being a dumb comment - you guys need to get a life and have a beer - chill out!. I'm sorry all you P.C geeks.
trust me mikey its next weekend, Vodafone have been working on this a long time with nokia and doing lots and lots of testing and its ready to rock and roll
