Howdy,

anybody out there (successfully?) using a nokia 6600 with vodafone live? Vodafone dont have an 'auto-configuration' for the 6600, their first level support is next to useless and apparently you have to pay to call '977' to speak to the internet guys. I've even tried a manual setup using the values on vodafone.net.nz but no dice....

this was soooo much easier using optus in oz... i just went to the nokia website and they sent through a couple of config msgs to setup WAP, MMS & even email for some of the mainstream net providers.... but the nokia.co.nz website (which i think is same as nokia.com.au) only has telstra, optus, virgin & vodafone AUS. *sigh*

On the vodafone.net.nz website they keep mentioning this WAP gateway IP address, but the closest i can find in the 6600 settings is the proxy address. is this the same thing?

at present i have the following setup:

APN: live.vodafone.com

data bearer: GPRS

homepage: http://live.vodafone.com

connection security: off

username:

password:

session mode: permanent

advanced settings:

phone ip: automatic

primary name server: 0.0.0.0

secondary name server: 0.0.0.0

proxy server: 172.030.038.003

proxy port: 9201

am i even close? any help would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Jared

Hi,
A Nokia 6600 cant be used with Vodafone Live, or PXT in NZ till February.
This is due to the fact the Vodafone NZ network isn’t running Wap 2.0 yet, it is only at 1.2.something – and the 6600 only has Wap 2.0 – and not backward compatible. This explains why VFNZ hasn’t released the phone (or the 6220) into their sales channels yet, and are expecting release in Feb when the network upgrade has been carried out.

You say February for WAP 2.0 support?
Is there any offical date, or easy way for us to know when they have it up and running?

I have just got my new Nokia 6820.. absolutly love it, but can't get MMS or WAP to work.. I presume it is because of the WAP 2.0 issue..

- Guess I'll just have to keep trying every day in Feb until it works :)

I dont know the date yet, will post again when I know it is or has happened.
You can check on www.gsmarena.com as to the specs of the phone, like for the 6820 it is Wap 2.0 and not backward compatible as well.
I believe the only Nokia that has Wap 2.0 and is backward compatible is the 3650.

Thanks for the info....

all i can say is.... 'well that sucks' :(

Hopefully vodafone will get their kit sorted out and I can start enjoying all the funky stuff that GPRS and WAP have to offer...

It was a bit of a bummer after playing with Optus Zoo over in Oz and being able to get streaming TV etc... although it was a tad bit difficult watching SBS, as almost everything is in french/italian/german/slovakian/polish etc... and you cant read subtitles on a 2 inch screen :)

One good thing to come out of all this.. as you have pointed out, nokia.co.nz only has support for Aussie networks, but try nokia-asia.com:

http://www.nokia-asia.com/nokia/0,,46734,00.html

They have New Zealand! (but don't have the 6600 or 6820 yet)
Could be helpful for all those out there with 'supported' phones :)

Is this the reason the T630 hasn't been released here yet?

Hi
Wap2.0 doesnt have an official release date. still in testing before its decided if its going to be released. Probably looking at the next few months, if the testing doesnt show up any bugs.
Also, even when it is set up, you will only have access to limited menus in vodafone live. if the phone is not a nz vodafone live branded phone it will not have access to all the downloads etc.

as for it being annoying for those who bought the phones from overseas. sorry to sound mean ... but ... You cant really blame vodafone for that. After all, they didnt make u buy the phone, and if you dont check that its compatible before you buy it then you really cant blame anyone but yourself. There is a good reason why phones are tested in nz and approved by networks before being released.

Imp3h,

Hey dude, I had much the same problem, until I rang the optus people and found out that I didnt actually have Data services configured on my account. Signing up for Optus Zoo is not enough, you need to ring Optus and have them turn on the Data/GPRS services. :)

Once you've done that, I would recommend doing the following (and they'll probably tell you the same thing):

1. goto: www.nokia.com.au, click the 'Support' Link on the front page.

2. On the new page, Select the 'Phones' option (either click the pic, or click on the more>>> link)

3. On the new page, in the bottom left hand corner is an option 'Operator Settings'. Click it.

4. Walk through each of the MMS, WAP and EMAIL wizards they have.

each one will send you a config message, which should setup the phone.

Note: the Live tv streaming on OptusZoo is kinda cool, CNN was wicked, watching all the NYE celebrations in Berlin etc while i was chilling out in Byron Bay :) but trying to watch SBS is a bit pointless, as most of it is foreign language and its impossible to read sub titles with such blocky pictures and such a tiny screen ;)

I am glad the live tv is free till the end of Jan. Coz i had $70 worth of data charges reversed on my last account. GPRS is NOT cheap... glad i found that out before i actually had to pay for it!!!! yikes!

cheers,
Jared

Hi JYates, here are the settings I use to get GPRS/Internet/Email access from my 6600. I still cant get MMS/PXT working yet. I understand that since the 6600 doesnt use a gateway IP address (ie. 172.030.038.003) that it is not compatible with Vodafone Live. Vodafone Live uses WAP1.2, 6600 supports WAP2.0, Vodafone are doing the upgrade in the next mth or two. PXT/MMS requires the use of the live.vodafone.com access point I believe.

From your email it looks like you are confusing configuration of GPRS with Access Points - there can be multiple access points (ie: Vodafone = internet access, Vodafone MMS = PXT) but all use the same GPRS config.

With the setting below you will have full Internet access so can: IRC, IM, WWW, FTP, IMAP/POP/SMTP. Just no PXT/MSS and no Vodafone Live.

Tools/Setting/Connection/Access Points:

Connection name: Vodafone
data bearer: GPRS
access point name www.vodafone.net.nz
username:
prompt passwd: NO
password:
auth: normal
homepage: http://wap.vodafone.net.nz
connection security: off

advanced settings:
phone ip: automatic
primary name server: 0.0.0.0
secondary name server: 0.0.0.0
proxy server: NONE
proxy port: 0

Tools/Setting/Connection/GPRS:

GPRS connection: when available
Access point: http://www.vodafone.net.nz

Here is a helpful URL, even with this I cant get Live or PXT/MMS working so I guess its the WAP version issue. :-(
