sbiddle: Let's forget about all the PTT crap.

Who's going to be the first network to deploy Push To View? :-)

Hmmmm. If the news are correct, it may be coming first on a CDMA EV-DO network, courtesy of Samsung.

Hmm just a thought on this.,

My understanding is walkie talkie push to talk is like SMS and push to view would be like PXT (MMS) - Telecom Video messaging. Yes it would be great next step.

Then when you see Videotelephony on 3G handsets making call is even more fun if you can see each other as well in real time. Thanks to videotelephony this is now possible. Just one press of a button and the person on the other end of the phone will appear live on your display. And you can see at a glance what sort of mood they are in, what they are wearing and where they are at the moment.

3G handset - PTT handset similar pricing what would you opt for live video or a push to view??

You dont see PTT even mentioned in places like Japan that have Videotelephony - live tv on their handsets etc.

Just a thought.

Push to View is essentially 3GSM video calling but has enhanced multimedia functionality. While Video calling was always hyped as one of the big benefits of 3GSM but it never took off initially, probably because 3 had such a small number of users and people didn't necessarily have friends on the 3 network. A few years later and it's suddenly becoming quite a cool thing, particularly with young people.

I can see Telecom wanting it so they can have something to compete against 3GSM video calling. IMHO the Motorola PTT software is far nicer than Telecom's software, having video capability on top of that would be almost as cool as a mobile phone port of Kazaa! :-)

Disenchanted I don't know where you get your information from. There is no plan to port the P2T service to the Harrier.

Unless someone can come up with the specs for PTT so someone can write an application to enable it .... :-)

what about Skype

works on Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC and Skype is free Internet telephony
that just works.

Skype is for calling other people on their computers or phones. Download Skype and start calling for free all over the world.

perhaps a smartphone version is needed.

Different market segments. Skype is aimed to users with a broadband connection. Builders, and users on the move are not close to a wireless Access Point all the time. Skype won't work over GPRS - too slow.

Apart from all the hype, Wi-Fi is not as ubiquitous like a cellular connection.

And it's only free when calling another Skype user - SkypeOut calls cost, and apparently they're not accepting some New Zealand credit cards for payment.

Telecom launched PTT on the same day as Vodafone so I dunno what this is all about.

The only reason Voda's launched is cos people using a particular phone (I assume the motorola) were using PTT for free....

Telecom's PTT is NOT done on a per minute basis.

At the moment it is $10 per month for 300 'pushes' and they 'won't charge for anything over 300' + 2 months free.

So in other words, PTT is $10 per month flatrate until further notice.

Available on Sanyo 7400, 4920 and 8200

its 3G time!

I dont know what the reference is to Vodafone not having a PTT service and hello commerce commission ?!?!?! I am sitting here with a Motorola V303p phone (Voda's PTT phone) and there are customers using the PTT service so the network is going .... hardware + network service = implementation of PTT ?!??!? maybe I am missing something. As for Vodafone only launching a service because people are using it for free ?!?!?!? what on earth is that all about ?!?!? do you honestly think that a company the size of Vodafone would make an investment in PTT based on something like that ? I respect peoples opininons on things but surely the facts are more important : ) ......

I believe there is intention on the part of vodafone to enable symbian os phones for PTT via software. I know that it includes UIQ phones like sony ericsson's p series 800/900/910 but not sure about other versions of the symbian os.

Voda launched PTT as natural progression of the service offerings, I'd say there were few moto 303p's in NZ prior to the launch.
The timing of the competitive launches is some what coincidental and somewhat pressure both companies were working on implementation of ptt/p2t and vodafones move to release may have given telecom the hurry up or even vice versa
